Looking back on the Glicks Block. Things look different today.

It was originally a frame commercial block; built by the Glick family that operated a hotel just west of the location in the 1840s. The commercial block was destroyed by fire April 3rd, 1877.

During its life span, it housed many of Hespeler’s earliest stores and shops such as Conrad Harbown, shoemaker (1859), William Knetchtel, harness maker (1862-63), Ashbury & Fitzsimmons, general merchants (1870-73), and many others. It also included a large hall on the second floor used mainly for social events and community meetings.

Percy (Punch) Harvey had an interesting and full life in the community. Here is an article written in 1943 in the Dominion Woollens newsletter. Make sure to listen to the 'PIT stop' feature at the bottom of the article to listen to Lary Turner recall Punch's life here in Hespeler. https://dominionwoollens.ca/d-w-w-news-vol-3-no-4/

This handsome range shipped at only 650lbs for easy moving. Hall Foundry made this and claimed it to be more efficient than gas and electric ranges. Definitely built to last.

145 Years ago today:

On this date, March 22nd, 1881, Jacob George Hespeler, Esq. died suddenly at the home of his son, age 70 years. He had appeared to be in his usual good health prior to his demise. Mr. Hespeler had walked to the post office to get his mail and upon his return, sat down to read his paper. His servant heard a peculiar cough and upon speaking to him received no reply, seeing that he was ill, she went for assistance. Medical aid being secured, it was seen that very little could be done and a short time later he breathed his last without regaining consciousness. His end was fearfully sudden, but there is reason for thankfulness that when it came he was spared suffering.

Hespeler was not the only location that hosted reunions! For many years, Hespeler's Snowbirds hosted a winter reunion in a Florida State Park. This is a photo of the Hespeler Reunion in Florida, March 2, 2011. Turned out most of the participants are related to the Einwechter family. Bill Jarrett and his wife are in the back; all others are relatives of the Einwechter clan.
