Meet the four contestants who took the stage at the Area 92 Humorous Speech Contest, including our very own Bill Young!

One common theme in their reasons for competing? The desire to challenge themselves. That’s a big part of what Toastmasters is about: creating opportunities to step outside your comfort zone, put your skills to the test, and grow through every experience.

Congratulations to all four contestants for stepping up to the challenge! 👏

Most people are not aware of their filler words until someone points them out. That’s part of what makes them tricky, they often slip into speech without us noticing.

At Toastmasters club meetings, the Ah-Counter listens for filler words and shares a report at the end of the meeting. It’s a simple exercise in awareness, because you can’t change a speaking habit you don’t notice.

Over time, that feedback helps members become more aware of their verbal habits and rely less on filler words.

Which filler word tends to sneak into your speech most often?

Growth is exciting. But growth that comes with people choosing to stay? That means even more!

Our Club was recently recognized for exceeding two membership goals. Over the last Toastmasters year, we welcomed 15+ new members while also maintaining a retention rate of over 75%.

This recognition says a lot about the kind of club we’re building: a space where people feel supported, connected, and given opportunities to keep learning and developing.

We’re proud to be one of only a handful of clubs in our district to receive this recognition, and even prouder of the members who make those numbers mean something every week.

Here’s to more growth, connection and development this year. 🥂

Cassie joined Cambridge Toastmasters Club 2728 at the start of the year with one goal: become a stronger public speaker.

A few months in, she has discovered much more than speeches. She found a place to sharpen her storytelling, better understand her strengths, practise where she still wants to grow, and has also stepped into leadership as our Vice President of Public Relations.

Want to listen in on one of her recent presentations and see the behind the scenes of preparing for it? Watch it here: https://youtu.be/7yebMNwDGyY?si=vBEpwQ-EYlBrEs3H

It’s easy to watch a great speaker and think, “They’re just naturally good at this.”

What we don’t see are the first attempts, the forgotten lines, the feedback they took home, and the many times they stood up and tried again.

You don’t have to be confident to start your public speaking journey, you can build confidence as you go.
