The Coping Centre

The Coping Centre Coping Bereavement Support Groups of Ontario was established in 1990 and is devoted to companioning bereaved people in their individual journeys of grief.

For the past 20 years we have been providing grief support for those who have lost a loved one. The headquarters of Coping is in Cambridge and there are 8 branches across Canada. Through a variety of programs, people and children learn to express and work through their loss in a safe environment, gaining tools to help them cope and eventually be able to reinvest in life again. Many of the families

that come to COPING are already suffering emotional and financial stresses. The relief is sometimes palpable when they are told that our programs are offered as a free service. Often, there are consequences when bereaved people are not supported adequately, e.g., relationship problems, unresolved anger, depression, etc. That is why so many medical professionals, clergy, teachers and other support workers are glad we are in the community. It has been said that if we mourn well, we can live well and love well again, but many people need support as they work through the difficulties of their grief. This community service is provided at no cost to the participants. We offer support groups for children, teens and adults. The charity is financed through a variety of fundraising efforts, including our Corvette raffle! The proceeds will help us increase our capacity while maintaining the quality of help we offer to hurting people.

Sometimes what feels heavy isn’t only the loss itself, but everything that stays unspoken alongside it.

This image is a quiet reminder that when thoughts and feelings are held in, they don’t simply fade away, they accumulate. Many people in grief find themselves trying to cope privately, protect others, or simply get through the day without saying what is really going on inside.

But grief was never meant to be carried entirely alone.
At The Coping Centre, we often see how meaningful it can be when people are given space to put words to what they’ve been holding — not to fix it, but simply to let it be acknowledged and heard.

If this resonates with you, you might gently consider:
What am I carrying that hasn’t been spoken yet?

We can easily lose hours scrolling social media, binge-watching TV, or filling our days with things we barely remember afterward.

But let's not label grief and mourning that way.

Remembering, reflecting and honouring our loss can be one of the most meaningful ways to spend our time. When we lose someone we love, we are met with one of life’s most significant moments, and it naturally calls for more of us — so why would we not give it that time?

Don’t feel guilty about stepping away from social expectations to mourn your loved ones. There is no need to fill every moment with distraction or noise. Sit with your loss, and give your feelings the attention they deserve.

Because time is never wasted when it is spent grieving.
