It's only 3 weeks away!

Infrastructure, innovation, and technical skill are foundational to economic growth. Securing the next generation of talent for construction, engineering, and the skilled trades is a vital workforce priority. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿ“

At the upcoming Explore Your Future youth expo, young talent will interface directly with industry leaders, union representatives, and engineering firms. From civil and mechanical engineering to specialized high-demand trades, this sector offers lucrative, resilient, and highly rewarding career trajectories.

Help bridge the skills gap by encouraging your students, apprentices, or youth networks to attend.

Thanks to our amazing Speakers Bureau volunteers for sharing your time and practical, real-life experiences to facilitate inspiring career related conversations with our students!

Shannon Knelsen, healthcare leader, educator, podcaster, creative arts enthusiast and entrepreneur discussed career pathways in healthcare with 100+ students in 4 classes of health care classes at St Benedict's Catholic High School.

Drawing from her many experiences in the industry, they discussed emergency room wait times, command centre operations, electronic health records, the future of AI and its place in healthcare among other things.

Ryan Brooks, freelance software developer, shared his fascinating and multi-faceted career story as a creator, inventor, pioneer and professional solver with a Careers class at Eastwood Collegiate.

He and the students discussed taking advantage of opportunities, the distinction between unethical and illegal business practices, networking, critical thinking, and wearing multiple hats. They also discussed how a good CEO is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and clean the washrooms.

Last week was all about prepping Co-op and Careers students about interviews, resumes and health and safety awareness. Our volunteers were out in full force helping Waterloo Region students prepare for their first co-operative education placements and first jobs.

We thank the many volunteers who shared their interview expertise and practical tips on the interview process, both in person and virtual.

Grand River Collegiate co-op students participated in interactive mock interviews:
Christopher Burke, Entrepreneur/Business Owner/Manager, Kaleidoscope Realty Inc. Brokerage, Carrah Johnston, HR Professional, Region of Waterloo, and Stephanie Carruth, Founder, Primary Consultant, Human Resources Specialist, Minds for Matter.

More interview workshops were delivered by our knowledgeable friends at Artemis Canada, who spoke to 4 different classes at 2 schools. Eastwood Collegiate hosted Leigh Farlow, Partner, and Bluevale Collegiate hosted Alex Daminato, Executive Recruitment Consultant.

Health and safety talks were also a hot topic for co-op students last week. Jason Church, Account Manager, Hewson Brothers Building, talked to 2 classes at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute.

Jason Hardie, Professor of Motive Power, Automotive, Truck and Coach and Heavy Equipment Repair, Conestoga College, shared his safety expertise with Bluevale Collegiate Institute co-op students.

In addition, regular talks resumed. Chad McNamara, Education and Community Outreach Manager, Drayton Entertainment, shared his interesting career story in the performing arts with a grade 10 careers class at Eastwood Collegiate Institute.

Sheryl Scott, Independent Associate, LegalShield, shared her experiences and insights on leadership with a business leadership class at Huron Heights Secondary School.

Indira Banerjee, Employment Counsellor, 2nd Chance Employment Counselling, shared insights into resume writing with grade 10 Career Studies students at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute.

We are thrilled to launch our brand-new video series, Company Stories, celebrating the incredible businesses, leaders, and entrepreneurs shaping Waterloo Region.

There are so many innovative organizations doing important work right in our backyard, and we canโ€™t wait to share their journeys with you.

To kick things off, we went behind the scenes at BWXT in Cambridge, a powerhouse on the forefront of global nuclear energy and clean power technologies.

We spoke with John MacQuarrie, President of Commercial Operations at BWXT, to learn more about their cutting-edge work and their impact on our community and the province of Ontario.
