An exciting new gardening project is happening at Elizabeth House.
Grounded in Indigenous landbased teachings, the Family Teaching Garden will be a yearround space that supports food security, environmental stewardship, and family wellbeing. It will provide motherled families—including newcomers, refugees, Indigenous families, and families transitioning from homelessness—with access to fresh produce, horticultural therapy, and a safe, creative outdoor space where children can explore, learn, and connect with nature alongside their caregivers.
The garden has been named Tonantzin, which means, in the Nahuatl language, (the traditional indigenous language of the Aztecs) translates to “Our Revered Mother” and symbolizes fertility, motherhood, and nurturing within Mexica (Aztec) culture.
Thank you to Rachael, our project lead, along with volunteers from Telus, Lecia, Amber, Peter and many more.
We look forward to updating you as the garden progresses.
