Our hearts are with those affected by today's tragedy

What began as an ordinary afternoon ended in tragedy when a collision and fire involving two Calgary Transit buses claimed three lives and left at least 10 others injured. A Calgary Police officer was also injured while responding to the emergency.

Behind every life lost is a family, friends and loved ones whose lives have been forever changed. Our deepest condolences go out to those grieving this unimaginable loss, and our thoughts are with everyone injured and recovering.

Tragedies like this remind us how unexpectedly life can change. No one begins their day expecting something like this to happen, and our hearts are with everyone facing the difficult days ahead.

Your Calgary firefighters were there alongside our emergency response partners to help those in need. Today, our thoughts remain with the passengers, transit operators and families affected by this tragedy.

To those grieving, those recovering and everyone whose lives have been changed, please know that your Calgary firefighters stand with you.

October 12 would have been Firefighter Derek Sharman’s 41st birthday.

Derek may no longer be with us, but his spirit lives on through the friendships he built, the stories we share and the traditions that keep his memory alive.

This year, we honour Derek through hard work, friendly competition and coming together as a fire family.

9 rounds:
- 9 step-ups
- 9 air squats
- 50 m dumbbell carry after all 9 rounds

7 rounds:
- 7 push-ups

Thank you, Mayor Farkas, for speaking up for all Calgarians. This complex crisis affects families, neighbourhoods and emergency services across our city. We need the Province and federal government working with the City, health care, the justice system and first responders on solutions that improve care and public safety. Calgary firefighters are ready to be part of that work.

CALGARY FIREFIGHTERS WIN $50M CONVENTION BID

IAFF firefighter delegates from across Canada and the United States voted at this year’s convention in Arlington, Texas, to bring the 2030 IAFF Convention to Calgary.

The convention is where firefighters help decide the future of their union and profession. Delegates debate and vote on resolutions and policy, including issues that affect firefighter health, safety and the communities we serve. In 2030, those decisions will be made here in Calgary.

Thousands of visitors are expected, with approximately $50 million in projected economic impact for local hotels, restaurants and businesses.

Thank you to Tourism Calgary for the hard work that helped make this possible and for showing delegates why Calgary is a destination worth choosing.

288 names. 288 families. A promise to remember.

Last Saturday, the IAFF fire-service family gathered in Colorado Springs as 288 fallen members from Canada and the United States were honoured at the 2026 Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial.

Each name on the Wall of Honor belongs to someone who served their community and was loved at home. The memorial gives families a place to see that their loved one’s service is remembered and that they do not carry their loss alone.

Your Calgary firefighters remember them. We stand with their families, today and always.
