Our umpires currently cover the Bantam and Midget level games under the auspices of the Calgary Minor Softball Association (CMSA). We regularly send umpires to the Alberta Summer Games, Alberta Provincial Championships, Western Canadian Championships and the Canadian National Championships. Our umpires are respected throughout the country as some of the most qualified and best trained umpires. We
have achieved this respect because we believe in training, training and more training. We send new umpires to their early season games with an experienced and qualified umpire who acts as their mentor and trainer. Our new officials say they enjoy the benefit of the mentoring program which assists them in becoming more confident and qualified on the diamond. Above all, we stand for fair play. It is our goal that every player has an opportunity to perform to the best of their ability within the limits of the rules. By knowing the rules, applying the rules correctly and using the proper umpire mechanics, we give every participant an equal opportunity to play the game of softball. We stand for trained officials. Our umpires are trained to be the best they can be and to give their full attention and energy to every game. Free Equipment to New Umpires! All new umpires will be provided with quality umpiring equipment from our loaner pool at no cost to them. This includes a Cap, Face Mask, Softball Canada Umpire Shirt, Chest Protector, Leg Protectors, Ball Bag, Indicator and Brush. We will also pay your first year fees to become a member of the Alberta Softball Umpires Association. These benefits are valued at over $400 to the new umpire. All we ask in return is that you umpire a reasonable number of games for us, give your best to the game and have fun doing it! We will also pay you $31 for each game you umpire β even those where you have a trainer by your side. You can get into the Softball Officiating game at no cost to yourself. All we need is your time and attention. CMSU Mentoring Program
The Calgary Minor Softball Umpires have set up an umpire mentoring program. This program is intended to assist the newer umpire with the initial learning of Softball Practices, the rules and the mechanics. It is available to all umpires whether their intent is community softball, local tournaments or Provincial and National events. When men, women and youths first begin the process of becoming an umpire, they can be overwhelmed with what needs to be done, how to do it, why to do it, and who to consult for the answers to any questions associated with the process. As they learn just enough to become dangerous to themselves, they are forgotten and thrown to the wolves. They need a friend β a mentor. The purpose of our Mentoring Program is to provide a one-on-one relationship between the newer official and the more experienced umpire who can help answer questions and be a source of advice and direction. New officials become exposed to, and get to know, veteran officials. The knowledge of the experienced umpire gets handed down to the next generation of officials. We will teach you to adjust your officiating to be appropriate for the level of play so that the coaches, players and other officials get the most benefit and enjoyment out of the game. We at the Calgary Minor Softball Umpires want to assist new umpires with the process of getting into the game of umpiring and enjoying their experience. Please let us know if we can help!
