Youth Rising: Stories, Connection & Action

The Calgary Justice Film Festival (CJFF), in partnership with the Human Rights Collective (a youth human rights organization), and the Calgary Arab Arts and Culture Society, invites you to kick back for a casual coffee event of film, conversation, and connection exploring the stories, experiences, and ideas shaping a generation.  The $5 ticket purchase will be donated to charity.

Featuring the powerful film Sudan, Remember Us* (rated +14), this event brings forward the voices of young people navigating change, civic action, and the future. Through personal storytelling and powerful filmmaking, the film captures a generation of young Sudanese fighting for freedom, justice, and a more democratic future. It explores the power of poetry, music, art, and collective action as tools for resistance, connection, and political transformation.

Following the screening, join the youth of the Human Rights Collective and others in an engaging panel discussion, exploring what it means to show up, get involved, and create change. The focus of the conversation will be community action, storytelling, solidarity, and the many ways young people are building movements and shaping the world around them.

This is a space to connect, ask questions, and be part of a youth-powered conversation.

*Given the sensitive and potentially disturbing, content of the film, including military violence and repression, this is a 14+event ONLY.

Date: Sunday August 9, 2026

Location: Fenyk Coffee & Social (10 Canada Olympic Common SW)
Screening: 5:00pm Panel discussion to follow

Tickets: $6.10 ($5 ticket - $1.10 tax and fees)

We are proud of connecting people, communities and artists ..

Mai Heikal is an Edmonton based visual artist .. Radwa Nasr is a Calgary based Folklore Dancer ..

We were happy to connect them during the Arab Heritage Month ..

Their connection is still going and producing g lovely art .. Mai Drew a Portrait of Radwa .. and wrote the following:

A New Painting

Radwa

Radwa Nasr is an Egyptian-Canadian folk dancer living in Alberta. She wishes to spread Egyptian folk art throughout Canada. She performs Tanoura dances and folk dances from every region of Egypt, paying a lot of attention to details, such as the costumes and jewelry, which she personally selects and matches to create dances that resemble works of art.

I love drawing dancers and have always wanted to ask real folk and ballet dancers to draw them. I met Radwa at the Arab Culture Festival in Alberta last month, and I was impressed by one of her performances. She asked me to draw her, and I was overjoyed by her request. This is a painting of her, inspired by photos from her Tanoura dance performance. I hope you like it.
