The longer the stay, the better the chance for life-long sobriety

Founded in 1995, Oxford House Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides self-run, peer-supported sober recovery homes for men and women who have a history of substance abuse and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. By providing

a safe and stable environment where men and women can focus on their recovery, Oxford House supports individuals to develop the skills necessary for self-sufficiency and successful reintegration back into society. Oxford House has 28 recovery homes operating in Calgary, Drumheller and Edmonton. When men and women in recovery come to Oxford House, they have already taken some important steps on their road to recovery. They’re ready to work hard. They know they’ll get out what they put in. And when they take the next step to live in an Oxford Home, they know we’ll support them. Because we’ve been there and know how important this step is. Recovery without relapse is possible in an Oxford home. Each home forms its own family and is situated in a suburban neighbourhood away from danger areas. The peer support of other residents in the house who have experienced many of the same difficulties is a benefit to our residents. They find understanding and hope while learning how to live with life’s challenges.

“If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.”

Sometimes the hardest part of moving forward isn’t taking the first step—it’s letting go of what’s been holding us back. Old habits. Old hurts. Old beliefs about who we are or what we deserve.

But here’s the truth: you were never meant to carry all of that forever.

Growth asks something of us. It asks for courage. It asks for honesty. And sometimes, it asks us to release the very things we once used to survive.

Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting your past—it means choosing not to let it define your future.
If you’re in a season of change, keep going. Even when it feels uncomfortable. Even when it feels uncertain.

Because on the other side of that release… is freedom.
And you deserve to fly.

In recovery, we are promised a new freedom and a new happiness.

Step 9 is often where something powerful begins to unfold. Making amends isn’t just about looking back at the past—it’s about gently clearing space for a future that feels lighter, more honest, and more connected.

As we take responsibility for the harm caused, something begins to shift inside us. Shame starts to loosen its grip. Relationships can begin to heal. And slowly, we start to understand what it means to live without constantly carrying the weight of yesterday.

That “new freedom” is so much more than being free from substances. It’s freedom within ourselves. Freedom to show up differently. Freedom to rebuild trust. Freedom to be part of a supportive community where growth is real and hope is alive.

And that “new happiness”? It often arrives quietly… in peaceful moments, in laughter that feels genuine again, in waking up and feeling proud of the direction life is taking.

Recovery is not about perfection—it’s about progress, honesty, and connection. Step 9 reminds us that healing doesn’t just repair the past… it opens the door to a completely new way of living.

Discover the Power of Peer Support in Oxford House's Transitional Housing

At Oxford House's Transitional Housing, peer support is the key to success. Peer-supported recovery harnesses the strength of communal support and shared experiences to aid residents on their journey to recovery.

Shared Understanding and Empathy: Peers who've faced similar struggles offer a unique level of understanding and empathy. They create a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel heard, validated, and understood without judgment or stigma.

Hope and Inspiration: Witnessing others' success stories in recovery instills hope and motivation. Real-life examples inspire belief in one's ability to overcome challenges and create a brighter future.

Guidance and Role Modeling: Residents who have triumphed in their own recovery journeys serve as valuable guides. They share practical advice, coping strategies, and insights based on their experiences, fostering effective coping mechanisms, problem-solving skills, and resilience.

Accountability and Support: Peer-supported recovery provides a household of residents who hold each other accountable. Regular meetings, check-ins, and emotional support encourage commitment to personal growth and recovery.

Community and Belonging: Peer support creates a sense of community where individuals find acceptance and embrace without judgment. It allows for authentic connections, healthy relationships, and a support network that extends beyond treatment.

Long-Term Recovery Maintenance: The importance of ongoing support is emphasized even after leaving Oxford House. Residents continue to provide support, helping maintain recovery, navigate challenges, and prevent relapse.
