Alberta University of the Arts Students' Association - AUArts SA Supporting the Growth of an Empowered and Creative Community. ✨

The AUArts Students’ Association is your student-run voice.

We promote health & well-being, provide professional growth opportunities, and champion students’ interests. 🙌 The AUArts Students Association (formally the ACAD Students’ Association) was formed in 1995 and has been a voice for students for over 25 years. We provide various services and programming to the AUArts student body, with our largest programming event being the public-facing Show + Sale.

We host year-round student programming in our permanent gallery space, the Marion Nicoll Gallery as well as running annual student artist residency HEAR/D. The Students’ Association leadership is composed of an elected Student Leadership Council and an Executive Committee, as well as part- and full-time staff members. Our semiannual elections ensure that the voices of the student body remain representative, and fresh.

Wingbeat
Matthew Gil curated by Jonathan Creese
MNG LRT Space
03.30.2026 - 04.20.2026
Reception: 04.02.2026

Wingbeat features winged vases and glazed paintings that combine intuitive processes of painting through glazing and form. I use reclaimed stoneware and cone 6 glazes to make vessels inspired by the lifted composition of chalices. Resembling organic forms in motion, like wings, leaves, and feathers, these slab-built additions become a surface for painting, embracing both intentional and accidental interactions between glazes to inform the work.

-

Matthew Gil is a Korean-Canadian artist based in Calgary, working intuitively in abstraction, using patterned contrasts of visual elements and luminosity to create harmonious compositions. He embraces the workmanship of risk, where discovery
within the process, moments of joy, and the artist’s hand become integral to his work. Abstraction offers the freedom and space to search inwards, where painting becomes a cycle of self reflection, seeking beauty in the moment, the process, and the self.

Marion Nicoll Gallery Presents:

Adapt
Jesi Yager
MNG Main Space
03.30.2026 - 04.20.2026
Reception: 04.02.2026

Adapt is an installation of tools and methods I have developed during my MFA research. While my primary medium is hot glass, I also use fibre, wood, metal, and any material that is called for in process-led investigation and creation. My work is a reflection of and on my experience living in a body that has been challenged by severe chronic pain and amputation, Adapt is a physical manifestation of converting disability into creative potential.

-

Jesi Yager is a current AUArts MFA candidate in Craft Studies with a focus in Glassblowing. She is a q***r amputee immigrant artist whose work explores the generative power of non-normativity: to be adaptive is necessarily to be creative and resilient. She splits her studio time between creating work and adapting or inventing the tools necessary to translate the poetry of a body into form and mark.

Call for Submissions: BIPOC JOY ✨
Ten artists, 10 disposable cameras 📸
Paid Opportunity 💰
Call closes April 8th 🗓️

In times when artists can feel pressure to present the painful aspects of their cultural experiences, opportunities to make art informed but not constrained by identity can feel hard to come by. So the MNG is looking for participants in a project centering scenes of joy in the lives of racialised creatives.

After a prep session with photographer Ose Irete (), whose practice seeks to document the reality of Black life in the Prairies and beyond, 10 disposable cameras will be dispensed to 10 artists who identify as BIPOC with the intention that they capture moments of joy from their everyday lives. Following a spring and early summer of shooting, photos from each participant will be printed and exhibited in the MNG Main Gallery this fall 2026.

Experience with photography is an asset but not required. If you are interested in being a part of this project, please fill out the form in our bio or visit marionnicollgallery.ca/submissions for more information. Call closes April 8.

Ever wondered what the Student Leadership Council (SLC) actually does? 👀
The SLC is the Students’ Association’s governing board — made up of elected student representatives from across AUArts programs who help guide the direction of the organization.
SLC members represent the voices of their departments, make decisions on things like budgets and governance strategy, and provide guidance to the Executive Committee on the future of the Students’ Association.
The best part? SLC roles are paid honorarium positions and offer hands-on experience in arts non-profit governance, leadership, and administration. 🗳️
From advocacy and student voice to institutional development and campus engagement, SLC reps help shape real change for students at AUArts.
Interested in getting involved? This could be your seat at the table.
