What an amazing turnout yesterday!

Our 2nd Annual Linda McKay-Panos Forum on Alberta's Referendum: Immigration and Human Rights brought together an incredible group of people, both in person and online, who wanted to learn more about the five immigration questions in the upcoming referendum.

A huge thank you to our fantastic panelists, Cori Ghitter, Jatin Shory, and Alice Lam, for helping us separate fact from fiction, challenge myths, and better understand what these questions could mean for Albertans and our communities.

What was especially encouraging was seeing people leave not only better informed, but inspired to share what they learned with their families, friends, and networks.

Knowledge is power, and informed voting matters!

Thank you to everyone who participated, asked questions, and contributed to such an important conversation. A huge thanks to our supporters Dignity Forum and Faculty of Law - University of Calgary

Let's keep talking, keep learning, and encourage everyone to make an informed decision on October 19.

Should Albertans have to show a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card to vote in provincial elections? That's what Referendum Question 5 asks. Our new blog post, part of our Alberta Referendum Civil Liberties Series, looks at what it could mean for your democratic and equality rights: https://www.aclrc.com/blog/citizenship-proof-to-vote-a-civil-liberties-look-at-question-5/

📌 Current rules: Only citizens can vote. You declare citizenship when you register, but no proof is required.

📌 Non-citizen voting: Two published cases from 2014 to 2025, out of about five million votes.

📌 Disproportionate impact: People who struggle to get or replace identity documents could face the biggest hurdles, including people without stable housing, seniors, students, rural and Indigenous voters, newcomers, and anyone whose name or gender marker doesn't match across their ID.

📌 Questions to ask yourself before you vote (drawn from the Oakes test, which courts use to decide if limits on Charter rights are justified):

1. Is the problem serious enough to justify limiting the right to vote?
2. Does the rule actually help solve that problem?
3. Is there a less restrictive way to achieve the same goal?
4. Do the benefits outweigh the harm to voters who could be turned away?

We don't tell you how to vote. We help you vote informed.
