🕯️ In Memory of W. Bro. Lorne “Gene” Johnston 🕯️
The Grand Lodge of Alberta extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Worshipful Brother Lorne “Gene” Johnston, who passed to the Grand Lodge Above on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 66.
Born in Belleville, Ontario, on October 3, 1959, W. Bro. Johnston lived a full and meaningful life built on love, service, and brotherhood. A proud Canadian Army Veteran and a skilled General Contractor, he dedicated his life to hard work, craftsmanship, and the service of others.
Gene shared 42 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Mona Bareham, including 25 years of marriage. Their life together was one of deep love, partnership, and laughter. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mona, his mother Madeline Johnston, and his siblings Bill (Cathy), Valerie (Ron), and Liz. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews—Kevin, Michael, Gary, Glen, Melanie, Cole, Sophie, and Brooke—as well as extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was predeceased by his father, Lorne Johnston, whose influence he carried proudly throughout his life.
Those who knew W. Bro. Johnston will remember his friendly and talkative nature, his love of music, and his curiosity for antiques, pool, and the metaphysical. He approached life with kindness, curiosity, and a willingness to help anyone in need.
A dedicated Freemason, W. Bro. Johnston exemplified the values of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. His sincerity, charity, and passion for the Craft will remain an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him as a Brother.
A Public Memorial Service with Masonic Funeral Rites will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Calgary Shrine Centre (5225 – 101 Street NW, Calgary, AB).
