Join us on March 31 for a special screening and conversation about housing affordability in Alberta.

The evening features a screening of “The Space We Create” documentary, a film that chronicles the story of The Aster — a 33-home attainable housing development led by designed to expand homeownership in one of Canada’s most constrained housing markets.

Following the screening, we’ll hear insights from ‘s Affordable Housing Modelling and Analysis research examining model and bring together a panel of experts to explore what these two made-in-Alberta projects can teach us about addressing housing affordability challenges in Calgary and across Alberta.

Both projects were supported by the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.

📣Our 2024-2025 Annual Report is here!

🎉 We approved just over $4 million in funding across 69 projects—the largest annual investment in the Foundation’s history!

As we reflect on a year of record investment, meaningful convening, and leadership transition, we are filled with gratitude—for our governors, staff, committee members, grantees, and the broad real estate ecosystem in the province we have the privilege of supporting through our funding programs.

We look forward to the year ahead with optimism and purpose.

🤝 Together, we will continue to invest, connect, and lead, ensuring real estate makes real impact for Albertans.

🎉 A legacy created by Alberta REALTORS®🎉

The Alberta Real Estate Foundation was established under the Real Estate Act in 1991, made possible because REALTORS® created a way to give back to the community and the profession through interest earned on trust deposits.

In this clip, past Chair Janice Resch and Chair Melanie Hulsker reflect on the early days of the Foundation and the people who helped bring it to life.

35 years later, that vision has grown into $36 million invested and 800+ projects strengthening the industry and benefiting communities across Alberta.

The Foundation is a story of foresight, generosity, and industry leadership.

What do toenails have to do with Real Estate?

Cancer-causing radon hides in our homes.
Science can track long-term exposure to radon in toenails.
And Alberta’s real estate industry helped make this research possible.

Since 2017, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation has funded multiple research initiatives through the Evict Radon National Study. These projects uncovered how housing design, ventilation, construction choices, and even how we live in our homes can increase radon exposure — the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

This research is now influencing building code discussions, inspection practices, public health policy, and Albertans' capacity to live and work in safer buildings.

Leadership Update at the Alberta Real Estate Foundation

We’re pleased to welcome Melanie Hulsker as the new Chair of our Board of Governors. Now entering her second term on the Board, Melanie brings deep expertise in community development and systems-level thinking from her work at the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary. Known for her collaborative approach and systems thinking, Melanie has already been a driving force in shaping the Foundation’s strategy and impact.

We’d also like to express our sincere thanks to Penny Omell, who served as Chair from 2023–2025 and now steps into the Past Chair role. Penny’s thoughtful stewardship helped guide the Foundation through important shifts in grantmaking and impact investment, ensuring our work remains grounded, forward-looking, and financially sound.
