Mid-Sun Community Garden

Mid-Sun Community Garden News and events from the Mid-Sun Community Garden which serves the communities of Midnapore and Sundance in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The Mid-Sun Community Garden was founded in May 2009. A group of enthusiastic residents of the Midnapore and Sundance communities of Calgary banded together to help build thirty 8′ x 4′ raised beds for the grassy area on the north side of the Mid-Sun Community Centre. In 2010, 20 more beds were added, as well as several perimeter fruit trees, Saskatoon bushes, and other landscaping considerations.

There are now over 60 garden beds and an ever-expanding, enthusiastic garden committee made up of over 20 dedicated volunteers.

“We work together – grow together – learn together.”

The garden creates a spirit of belonging and cooperation as we volunteer for team roles and general work bees to enhance of the garden area and its features; prepare the garden for each season; and share gardening tips to enhance plant choices and productivity. We celebrate individuality and Inclusiveness with gardeners of all ages, including children from Mid-Sun Day Care and Summer Camps.

🥔SPUD-TACULAR INFO🥔

💡Potatoes are related to tomatoes, peppers and eggplants: they all belong to the nightshade or Solanaceae family. While potatoes produce edible tubers underground, they can also produce a fruit above ground that looks similar to a cherry tomato. This fruit, however, is not edible and is related to tomatoes 🍅

🌱KEEP ON PLANTIN’!🌱

Cool season plants may be petering out in growth as the hot days of summer move in. Or, you may be harvesting plants such as lettuce, radishes and kale leaving empty spaces in your garden.

Here are three reasons to fill those spots with annuals:

1️⃣ Annual flowers like aster, marigold and borage bring not only beauty to your garden, but are also beneficial for insects. If you're looking to build a backyard ecosystem, you'll want to be sure to plant annual flowers in those empty spaces.

2️⃣ Planting in newly emptied spaces will help keep your soil healthy. Soil that bakes in the sun can lose beneficial bacteria, nutrition and volume as harsh winds can blow the dry layers away. Popping annuals in these spots will anchor the soil and keep microbes thriving.

3️⃣ If you're looking to get the most out of your garden it's logical to keep it producing instead of empty. You’ll get more yield if you fill up the gaps with plants that will provide. Consider annual herbs for these spaces which are easy to dry and add to the pantry.

👍Chamomile & nasturtium are great + purposeful soil fillers!
