Why do our volunteers join PALS? 🐾💙 For many of our volunteers, the journey begins with a moment they never forget.

Carrie Hughes joined PALS after experiencing firsthand the impact a therapy team had on her family during an incredibly difficult time. While her dad was receiving care at Skyview Hospice, a PALS visit helped her youngest son feel comfortable enough to come into the room for what would be his final visit with his grandfather. 🥹

“At 8 years old, the whole situation was very scary for him… the dogs put him at ease, and I will never be able to say thank you enough for that.” That moment stayed with Carrie and inspired her to become part of the PALS community.

Every PALS volunteer has their own reason for joining. Some want to give back, some have experienced the impact of pet therapy themselves, and many simply want to share their pet with others. One thing is for certain: behind every therapy team is a story. 💙

PALS Pet Therapy volunteers visit hospitals, long-term care homes, schools, libraries, rehabilitation centres, and many other community organizations throughout Calgary. Together, our volunteer teams help reduce stress, ease loneliness, and brighten someone's day through the power of the human-animal bond.

If you're interested in joining our amazing volunteer community, your first step is attending our upcoming Volunteer Information Session.

Another meaningful week of visits in the community. 💙

Our volunteer therapy animal teams had the privilege of spending time with:
• Men in recovery, creating space for connection, conversation, and encouragement.
• Adolescents receiving support for mental health and addiction challenges, where a calm, non-judgmental presence can make a real difference.
• Seniors in a retirement residence, sharing companionship and brightening the day through pet therapy visits.

At PALS Pets, we believe the human-animal bond has the power to support people in every stage of life. Through animal-assisted therapy and pet visitation programs across Calgary, our volunteers help foster moments of comfort, connection, and community every day.

Together, we're helping build a more connected and compassionate Calgary.

Meet your PAL, Wicket 🐶

Named after the legendary Ewok, Wicket Wystri Warrick 🐻 from Star Wars, this little guy is always ready for an adventure.

If you meet Wicket, make sure to ask him to "pound it" 👊 His paw-bump is one of his signature moves.

Fun fact: Wicket is basically famous — you can spot him in a Morrison Homes commercial 😂 He's also a seasoned traveller, having visited all 10 provinces from coast to coast. But no matter where he goes, his favourite role is being a PAL.

Through programs like StoryPALS, our therapy pet teams support children and youth by bringing calm, comfort, and confidence into educational environments. 📚🐾💙

One of the most special things we see is the way animals help break down barriers. A nervous reader suddenly feels more relaxed. A quiet student starts to open up. A difficult day feels a little lighter with a dog or cat gently listening nearby.

Sometimes reading out loud feels easier when your audience has four paws and no judgment. 🐶📖

We also extend visits into post-secondary spaces, where students facing stress, exams, or big life transitions can take a moment to pause, breathe, and reset with our therapy pets.

🐾 We asked our volunteers: Why did you join PALS? 💙

“I joined PALS because Takoda loved people. What I found out was just how meaningful and impactful our visits have been. Watching people’s reactions to the pets ranges from pure joy and happiness to hugs and tears.”

“We joined PALS because Kiva was given a second chance at life, and we wanted to pay that gift forward. Kiva has a special way of bringing comfort to people—sharing cuddles, brightening someone's day, and offering hope. Through PALS, she gets to do what she loves most: spreading smiles, comfort, and unconditional love.”

“I met a PALS volunteer at YYC. Loved the encounter and so did my kids. It became a longtime goal to have a dog we could do pet therapy with. Fast forward many years, and the dream became reality. Jock and I love our work—meeting people and making their day.”
