CSSDP Calgary

CSSDP Calgary In general, CSSDP is a network comprised of youth and students who are concerned about the negative impact drug policies have on individuals and communities.

Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP) is a national grassroots network of student and youth chapters that are working on drug policy issues facing their communities! The Calgary Chapter of CSSDP consists of students & youth advocating for harm reduction, sensible drug policies, drug education, human rights, and public health on campus and across the city!! CSSDP considers problematic

drug use in society primarily a health issue rather than a criminal justice issue, and advocates for appropriate responses to reduce and prevent harm from drug use. CSSDP provides education and resources to empower chapters formed by students and youth in their work on substance use issues facing their peer groups and communities. CSSDP mobilizes it members to participate in the political process at all levels, pushing for sensible policies to achieve a safer and more just future, while combating counterproductive drug policies, particularly those that directly harm young people.

“We don’t have to go to the streets anymore to make our habit, to make money to pay for our pills. Since I’ve been on (the SOS program), I haven’t gone to jail in three and a half years. So, that’s a good thing. I’m pretty much not working (in s*x work) at all anymore, so. It saved my life,” a client said in the report.

The Safer Opioid Supply (SOS) Program, run by the London InterCommunity Health Centre is showing positive results in client retention and reduced overdoses.

"For the longest time, we said, 'Hey, learn CPR, learn first aid, maybe you'll save a life,'" said Jones. "Well, now — carry a naloxone kit, maybe you'll save a life."

When Jordan Knapp noticed a friend sitting pale, silent and sweaty on a couch at a Calgary house party, she instantly recognized an opiod overdose and used a naloxone kit to save him. She's far from the only young Albertan to carry the kits everywhere these days.

"In some places where it was once widely available . . . there’s no he**in to be found. And they want it back, not just because it’s their drug of choice but also because its replacement—fentanyl—is killing people in droves."

In many former he**in strongholds in the U.S. and Canada, the opioid is disappearing, fueling fentanyl overdoses and prompting some users to push for a renaissance.
