Sri Lanka Canada Association Calgary

Sri Lanka Canada Association Calgary To promote Sri Lankan culture within community of Calgary Alberta. The members of SLCA-Calgary comprise mainly Calgary residents of Sri Lankan origin.

The association welcomes all well-wishes irrespective of nationality and ethnicity who wish to participate in its activities. The association was registered as a non-profit organization in December 1979 (Alberta Registration # 502210347) by a small group of Sri Lankan Calgarians. Since then, it has expanded exponentially hosting spectacular cultural shows that had accommodated over 400 spectators.

Our vision is to promote the Two Thousand Six Hundred-year old heritage, culture, and traditions while incorporating them in our annual activities. Our commitment is to teach and share with fellow Canadians the precious values that we have inherited from generation to generation. These values would enhance peace and harmony not only within our community but also throughout Canada. We welcome all Canadians to our association, so that they could learn about our cultural heritage and enjoy the Sri Lankan hospitality. Sri Lanka was colonized by three western nations: Portugal, Holland and Great Britain. Our culture bears traces left by these colonialists and that makes our nation unique. SLCA-C has taken a new direction lately in implementing policies to encourage the young generation to be involved in cultural and social activities that it organizes. Since we are members who are multi-ethnic, all presentations are conducted in two languages, where one language is always English. SLCA-C conducts annually (a) a Members’ Day in July outdoors, (b) a cultural show indoors in September followed by a dinner for members, (c) a sport event in August in which the entire spectrum of ages get the opportunity to participate in cricket, elle, netball & volleyball, (d) Christmas celebrations in December while distributing gifts to member’s children, and (e) the Sri Lankan Independence Day celebration in February, which is both educational and entertaining. Should you share this passion, we invite you to meet the President, and the Executive Committee so that you will get an insight of our association, while enjoying a cup of Sri Lankan Tea, widely known as “Ceylon Tea” – the best in the world!

An update from Sri Lanka Medical Help (SLMH) YYC !

Today, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude and pride as we share a milestone that means so much to all of us.

Thanks to the incredible support from our community, we were able to donate eight patient monitors valued at Rs. 4 million—funded entirely from the net proceeds of the BnS Concert with Umaria & Randhir in Calgary- 2024.

The official handover took place on February 5, 2026, at the Ministry of Health, graced by the presence of Director General of Health, Dr. Asela Gunawardene where our team member Lal Perera was also present to honor the occasion.

This is more than a donation—it is another promise kept. It marks the second major healthcare initiative by SLMH, following our proud contribution to the Pediatric Respiratory Unit at Lady Ridgeway Hospital in July 2023, made possible through Rs. 3.6 million in funds from Billy Fernando with 2Forty2 Concert – 2022. Together, we are helping strengthen the medical care available to families across Sri Lanka.

Our sincere and heartfelt appreciation goes to:
❤️ Dr. Ayanthi Karunarathne, Dr. Peshala Dissanayake, and Dr. Isuru Gayan Abeywardane, whose tireless efforts, coordination, and guidance made this project possible—from navigating Ministry of Health and National Medical Research Council (NMRC) approvals and to supporting vendor sourcing.

🎤 To the amazing artists Bathiya & Santhush, Umaria, Randhir, the Lunu Dehi Band, and the Technical Crew (all 14 team members)—thank you for giving Calgary a night we will never forget. Your music became a bridge of hope.

🙏 Heartfelt thanks to Sudesh Muthu and Chaminda Weerasinghe for their seamless coordination of the Canada Tour.

❤️ To our generous sponsors, who saw the vision and chose to stand alongside us—thank you for your faith in this cause.

❤️ To our incredible fans who traveled from Calgary, surrounding towns, Red Deer, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and beyond—your energy, love, and presence made this dream a reality.

And finally……

❤️ To the invisible heroes—our army of volunteers—who worked tirelessly from the moment this event was just an idea… we are humbled by your dedication, unity, and unwavering support. None of this would have been possible without you.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU.
Together, we are making a real, lasting difference in the lives of people who need it most. ❤️

— The SLMH Team: Himali, Kanthi, Lal, Upul & Sajith

This is more than an endeavour. It’s a movement of compassion, purpose, and hope. And we are deeply grateful to walk this journey with each of you. 🙏✨

Sri Lanka Medical Help YYC proudly presents its 3rd fundraising concert, featuring renowned Sri Lankan artists Kasun Kalhara and Nirosha Virajini.

Following two successful concerts in 2022 and 2024, which raised over $37,000 CAD, funds were directed toward refurbishing the Pediatric Respiratory Clinic at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital and donating 8 patient monitors to rural hospitals in Sri Lanka.
We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who supported these initiatives — this success belongs to all of you.
