The association welcomes all well-wishes irrespective of nationality and ethnicity who wish to participate in its activities. The association was registered as a non-profit organization in December 1979 (Alberta Registration # 502210347) by a small group of Sri Lankan Calgarians. Since then, it has expanded exponentially hosting spectacular cultural shows that had accommodated over 400 spectators.
Our vision is to promote the Two Thousand Six Hundred-year old heritage, culture, and traditions while incorporating them in our annual activities. Our commitment is to teach and share with fellow Canadians the precious values that we have inherited from generation to generation. These values would enhance peace and harmony not only within our community but also throughout Canada. We welcome all Canadians to our association, so that they could learn about our cultural heritage and enjoy the Sri Lankan hospitality. Sri Lanka was colonized by three western nations: Portugal, Holland and Great Britain. Our culture bears traces left by these colonialists and that makes our nation unique. SLCA-C has taken a new direction lately in implementing policies to encourage the young generation to be involved in cultural and social activities that it organizes. Since we are members who are multi-ethnic, all presentations are conducted in two languages, where one language is always English. SLCA-C conducts annually (a) a Members’ Day in July outdoors, (b) a cultural show indoors in September followed by a dinner for members, (c) a sport event in August in which the entire spectrum of ages get the opportunity to participate in cricket, elle, netball & volleyball, (d) Christmas celebrations in December while distributing gifts to member’s children, and (e) the Sri Lankan Independence Day celebration in February, which is both educational and entertaining. Should you share this passion, we invite you to meet the President, and the Executive Committee so that you will get an insight of our association, while enjoying a cup of Sri Lankan Tea, widely known as “Ceylon Tea” – the best in the world!
