At NHA, accessibility is often about making (seemingly) small improvements where we can, when we can.

Recently, that meant two projects:

Adding a new ramp at one of our buildings, to make getting in easier for residents and visitors using walkers, mobility aids, or strollers - or just for anyone who benefits from a more gradual path to the door.

We also added an accessible push button the Norfolk office doors (!), making it easier for residents and neighbours to come and go independently.

Our goal is simply to make our buildings more accessible, bit by bit. Got suggestions? We’re always open to them!

If you picture housing advocacy, you might imagine standing behind a podium and speaking at city hall or meeting with elected officials.

Sometimes it looks like that.

More often, it looks like an ordinary Tuesday.

We recently followed our Manager of Strategy & Engagement, Inam Teja, through a typical workday to better understand what advocacy looks like behind the scenes, and why so much of this work happens long before anyone sees a policy change.

Residents of NHA as well as neighbours utilize our cupboards to cover some basic necessities such as food, toiletries, and warm-weather gear on a need-by-need basis.

We keep the cupboards stocked year round - with your support - and don’t ask questions about who grabs supplies or when. Donations can be made anonymously, or we’d love to thank you publicly!

Conversations around our health shouldn’t be limited to things like doctors’ visits. Because true health starts much, much earlier. And it’s not necessarily about your habits.

It’s about your connection to others. Designing communities that foster opportunities to “bump into” one another, to lend a supportive hand, to volunteer, to share, to witness, and to be active should be at the forefront of every conversation we’re having about health.

Because health is not a silo-ed event. It’s an accumulation of how we live - and with whom.

Each year, our Report to the Community gives us a chance to step back and reflect on what’s been built over the year. And this year, we really got to thinking about what – and how – it's been built to last.

This year’s report, Foundations of Stability, is grounded in that idea. It looks at the conditions that help people feel supported and able to move forward in their lives, and the role community housing plays in creating that kind of foundation.

There’s a lot we’re proud of, and just as importantly, a clear sense of where we’re heading next.
