Alberta Society of Artists

Alberta Society of Artists A Brief History…
The ASA is a large part of Alberta’s visual arts history, through its members, its exhibitions and other initiatives.

The Society founded in 1931, is the longest standing society of juried professional artists in Alberta. WHAT WE DO
Membership:
The Society is a Non-profit, Registered Charity that works with public venues to provide enhanced support for existing programs in education and exhibition. Members of the Society are juried in by their peers and provide professional recognition to the province’s artist c

ommunity. Alberta artists may apply for Juried Membership during our annual drive. There is an open membership category for Associate Members who may contribute to the Society in many ways. They may volunteer, apply for exhibitions and participate with board activities, including annual meetings wherein they have the right to vote. All Members receive a newsletter that has been existence since the 1930’s. Non-member artists may participate in most exhibition calls. Our group exhibitions are 'blind' juried by a revolving list of both juried ASA members and other invited professionals. We welcome and encourage non-member participation. Educational Programming
Every year, the Society provides scholarships to post-secondary and graduate Visual Arts students who attend colleges or universities in Alberta. Our Exhibitions and speaker and artist talk events reach the general public throughout Alberta in venues that are free to the public: The Art Gallery of Alberta Community Gallery and the Walterdale Theatre in Edmonton, the Northern & Southern Jubilee Auditoria, the Calgary Public Libraries, Western GM Gallery in Drumheller, and Crowsnest Pass Art Gallery in Blairmore exhibit our juried group exhibitions annually. In addition, the ASA is responsible for the TREX program in South-western Alberta. Trex provides art exhibitions to communities, schools and libraries throughout its designated region.

We are so pleased to welcome Kelly Zeeb- - as aJuried member of the Alberta Society of Artists.

Kelly is a Canadian visual artist whose practice centres on accessibility. Her unique and popular
style, which she jokingly coined “Zeebism”, was created during her studies at Emily Carr
University, stemming from a desire to reduce visual and cognitive load on art viewers. Kelly’s
work has been featured in galleries and publications across Canada and her art can be found in
collections around the world. A prolific painter and life-long learner, she hopes to continue to
grow as an artist and explore inclusivity in her works while advocating for neurodivergent
awareness within contemporary art.

On behalf of the Alberta society of artist, we are so pleased to welcome as Life member. Her on going contributions and commitment to the ASA and the arts of Alberta do not go unnoticed. We are so grateful to have you apart of the Alberta society of artist

“My life in art started at a very young age, took some detours for career and family reasons, only to become a full-time artist and art instructor/juror/writer, author, facilitator of painting holidays and arts volunteer starting in my late forties. I have never looked back. It has been a great ride!

I gradually joined art organizations locally and nationally and offered my organizational skills which resulted in about 25 years of serving as mostly an exhibitions coordinator which I enjoyed a lot and allowed me to not only connect with the local art scene but national ones as well. As for my 10 years volunteering for the ASA in the 90s and 2000s, this meant exhibitions in various parts of Alberta and neighbouring provinces. I remember those years as very busy but fulfilling on many levels, and ASA members appreciated the connections we built together.

When time allows, I still love contributing to the ASA as I consider it my artistic home!

As for my own art practice, I came from being a watercolourist to becoming an artist proficient in all mediums including photography which keeps me excited about artmaking. I enjoy connecting with other artists in groups of common interest for the purpose of encouraging and supporting each other.

I feel blessed to be an artist and to be recognized as an ASA Life Member. I will continue sharing my energy & knowledge.

With gratitude!

Karin Richter”
