Spring has arrived.... in June! A late spring with so much cold and snow cover, but lots of beautiful flowers coming along in all our beds.

The Median Xeriscape project will resume mid-late June with 30 new trees planted by the City to replace the Schuberts removed in April. As predicted by the Landscape Committee, the quackgrass has shown itself.... 2 applications of EcoClear (organic grass control) have been scheduled starting this week. This will be an ongoing part of maintenance. Shrubs and perennials late June/early July; mulch and grow!

All green areas have been fertilized, mowed once or twice so far, and will have the dandelions sprayed asap. Watch for signs notifying date(s) of spraying.

The City's new salt mixture took a heavy toll on our medians this winter. The Landscape Committee will be looking at re-median measures over the coming weeks.

**Please plan to attend the NDHA's AGM Wednesday June 18th at 7:00 pm Menno Simmons School on 69 St. SW **

Phase 1 of the Median Xeriscape Project is now complete!

When the City comes to plant 30 replacement trees in these medians (mid to late June), the rest of the plantings will be completed. Bark mulch will be applied to retain the moisture. Plants are chosen for drought and salt tolerance but will be watered 2-3 times/week for the first year. Any grass coming through the river rock and garden mix will be controlled with 'EcoClear'. Our amazing maintenance crews will also be monitoring for weeds and garbage.

The NDHA will have a table at the annual Stampede Breakfast June 22nd. Please come by and say hello!

Schubert Removals: April 21 saw the City's Urban Forestry team take down 56 trees severely affected by Black Knot.... it is heart breaking to see the stumps along DR Blvd.

As a good will gesture, the City has offered immediate replacement of all that were removed! The NDHA's Landscape Committee will work with the City on a cost-shared basis for replacements over the coming weeks.

Black Knot of Cherry: You may have noticed last fall and over the winter months, that many of our Schubert Chokecherries on the medians were affected by the Black Knot fungus. This is very prevalent on the West side of Sarcee Trail due to the native chokecherry infestation in surrounding natural areas.
Urban Forestry crews will be in Discovery the week of April 21st to prune the worst of the knot out.... removing trees that have more than 50% damage. Please see the link for more info:

ALAS!! .... a new sustainable look for the Discovery Boulevard medians!
Beginning this spring, work crews will start on an ambitious project to re-landscape the 7 medians along Discovery Ridge Boulevard between Discovery Ridge Link to the intersection of Discovery Ridge Lane/Hill. Koodos to Carolyn Brown and the members of the NDHA Landscaping Committee who have worked tirelessly on this project from it's conceptual drawings through the bid process that resulted in awarding the construction contract to ULS Landscaping and Maintenance Ltd. The end result will bring an end to the ongoing struggles faced by the Landscaping Committee to maintain the 'grass' against the destructive salt spray from vehicles traveling along the roadway. The 'grass' will be replaced by xeriscape landscaping that will feature low lying shrubbery, colorful perennials, ornamental grasses and with boulder accents. All will be contoured with river rock bordering the concrete curb.

In order to provide work crews with a safe working environment, travel along Discovery Ridge Boulevard will be impacted somewhat during construction. Please reduce your speed and obey signage and/or flagmen during the implementation of this landscaping project. Thank you

Blizzard Update December 3 - ULS Landscaping Snow Removal

Please drive cautiously around Calgary and southern Alberta. Many roadways, off ramps, and parking lots, remain blocked with large drifts. We recommend having a shovel and warm clothes in your car at all times if you are attempting a journey anywhere. If you are heading out of town on a highway please check road reports prior to traveling, and also pack a candle and warm blankets in case of emergency.

ULS has been engaged in round the clock operations since accumulations began 3 am Monday morning. Unfortunately the blowing snow continued to increase the size of drifts throughout the night and into this morning. The snow was blowing back in as quick as our crews could clear it. This made it very difficult for our people to gain the upper hand last night, however the weather has turned a corner this morning.

Blown in snow is dense enough to build an igloo, and is very difficult to remove because of its density. Our crews are working diligently through the harsh conditions to provide access for people around the city. Thank you for your patience, we will be working around the clock until all access is restored
