Seven Starving Artists Theatre Collective Seven Starving Artists is a collaborative theatre collective focused on presenting challenging work by and with emerging artists in Calgary and area.

Seven Starving Artists was formed at the University of Lethbridge by a group of senior students looking to create a place for themselves in the ever-growing landscape of Canadian theatre. The name Seven Starving Artists sprung from a slip of the tongue while several of these students were in the midst of setting up for technical rehearsals for a production they were working on together: one of the

designers, having brought baked goods for the crew, demanded that they finish them off so that she wouldn’t have to bring them home herself. A crew member made an offhand comment - “don’t forget that seven starving actors are going to be bursting in here in an hour.” The imagery of the cast devouring the remaining food, coupled with the fact that there were actually only six cast members in that particular show, was funny enough that the phrase stuck. The founding members of Seven Starving Artists chose to work together due to a shared desire to create and produce new and exciting work that challenges social norms and pushes the boundaries of the art form.
