Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change. 💛

That’s the theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day, and it reminds us that sometimes the most important thing we can do is listen.

For families navigating childhood cancer, there can be a lot to carry. Fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and emotions that aren’t always easy to talk about. Having a safe space to be heard can make a difference.

At Kids Cancer Care, families can access free, one-hour counselling sessions with our social worker and family engagement coordinator.

Today, we’re checking in with ourselves, our families, and our friends. Every lived experience deserves to be heard, and no one should have to navigate difficult moments alone.

Janice McLeod’s legacy will continue for years to come. 💛

On July 17, 2026, the McLeod family lost a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Kids Cancer Care lost a cherished member of our community who spent 20 years dedicated to helping children and families affected by cancer.

Janice was a true master of service. She was happiest when supporting others, helping them reach their goals and giving generously of her time and heart.

To honour her life and 20 years of service to KCC, Janice’s family has established the Janice McLeod Memorial Fund.

The fund will support KCC’s Teen Leadership Program, helping teens affected by cancer build confidence, independence, leadership skills and lifelong connections. Help us carry Janice’s legacy forward and create more opportunities for young people affected by cancer to discover their strengths, lead, connect and give back.

Fostering empathy and understanding. 💛

Our Cancer in the Classroom program helps children with cancer feel supported and understood at school. Through age-appropriate presentations, we answer questions, clear up misconceptions and help classmates understand what cancer can look like. Today, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

As an organization, we’re taking time to listen, learn and reflect. This year, our staff will be joining a Lunch & Learn hosted by the University of Calgary featuring Dr. Wilton Littlechild, a Cree Chief, residential school survivor and lawyer who has dedicated his life to advancing Indigenous rights and treaties.

Reconciliation is an ongoing process and we’re committed to learning the truth and developing a deeper understanding of the past to help create a better future. Today, and throughout the year, we invite our community to make space to listen, learn and reflect.

At just two and a half, Artem was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour. After three years of surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and three bone marrow transplants, he was finally cancer-free. But he still had a long road ahead.

He needed to rebuild his confidence, reconnect with other children and experience the childhood that cancer had interrupted.

That’s where Kids Cancer Care came in.

Through PEER exercise program, Artem found connection and confidence. At Camp SunRise, he played, explored and visited the Calgary Zoo. Through Cancer in the Classroom, his teachers and classmates learned how to understand and support him as he returned to school.

On Friday, we welcomed our community to Curiosity Lab: Discoveries in Pediatric Cancer Research, Kids Cancer Care’s first annual research day.

We heard from five Calgary researchers who are working to change what’s possible in pediatric cancer care:

Dr. Lucie Lafay-Cousin on cancer mRNA vaccines for children with hard-to-treat brain tumours.
Dr. Carolina Chamorro-Vina and Chantelle Ball on helping teens affected by cancer build confidence through physical activity.
Dr. Brandon Craig on protecting developing brains from the effects of radiation.
Dr. Fiona Schulte on turning symptom screening into better cancer care.
Dr. Aru Narendran on developing new cancer vaccines that train the immune system to target childhood cancer.

A special thank you to His Worship Jeromy Farkas, Mayor of Calgary, for joining us and showing his support for pediatric cancer research.

A huge shoutout to Scientists in School for bringing hands-on STEM learning to our kids and helping them explore geophysics, biology and conservation. We loved watching them take the stage and share their discoveries with the adults, too!

A HUGE shoutout to LaunchPad Golf Mickelson National for their incredible support of our PEER teens!

For the third year in a row, LaunchPad has generously donated four suites at their Mickelson National location, giving our teens the opportunity to get active and spend time together in an amazing space. ⛳️
