10 Strategies to Achieve Equitable Public Education

We would like the Alberta Government to redefine and recommit the government’s responsibility to a more equitable public education system for all Alberta students. Make high quality early childhood education universal and accessible, leveling the playing field and closing the achievement gap for underprivileged children. Build schools as commun

ity engagement centres, comprehensive facilities where children and citizens can participate physically, intellectually and civically. Eliminate ALL barriers including all school-related fees (including, but not limited to, instructional materials, bussing, lunch supervision) and application procedures. All schools should have a full, inclusive, and balanced curriculum including but not limited to arts, music, science, history, language arts, additional languages, mathematics, and physical education. Reduce class sizes to bring them in line with the recommendations in the Alberta Learning Commission report of 2003. Integrate charter schools into public system, eliminating all fees and ability to deny access. Provide integrated services for students including medical and social services that help children keep up with advantaged peers. Eliminate high stakes standardized testing. Return to specialization for teachers at all grade levels. Recognize that public education is a public responsibility not a consumer good. Its quality and accessibility should be equitable across the province.

It is critical for trustees to find courage and resist openly & vocally during this authoritarian over-reach. If current trustees refuse to speak the truth about Bill 25 and other draconian policies then they are ostensibly agreeing to forfeit their rights through their silence. Defending public education and democracy is the fiduciary duty of current school board trustees.

Very disappointing to see “The Alberta School Boards’ Association declined an interview request for this story. The Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association did not respond to inquiries.”
Please demand your elected representatives & their associations do better and speak up, especially when the opportunities are presented.

These unelected far-right actors are influencing policy decisions and targeting vulnerable kids and our schools. The alignment of the “parental rights” movement and pro-‘school choice’ lobbyists are pushing forward with their dark agenda to not only destroy public education but also to control freedom of expression and identity.

“PCE, an Alberta-based parental rights group, has campaigned against sexual orientation and gender identity education in schools, gay-straight alliance (GSA) laws and other 2SLGBTQ-related policies. In the lead up to the 2025 municipal elections, the group was part of a drive to “conservatize” school boards by training what it claimed to be hundreds of candidates to run in local school board elections.”

“This won’t “build on” public education, though. It will take from it. Everyone contemplating this significant expenditure needs to understand that.”

The private school lobby has deep pockets and the UCP govt likely already has friends lined up for this funneling of public money to build private buildings — at the expense of our public education system that serves all, including children with complex needs.

Critics say the United Conservative Government’s plan to fund private-school construction projects to the tune of $90 million over three years makes no sense. Alas, the scheme announced by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides at the end of last week to “create 6,000 new student spaces at inde...

Public money belongs to public schools, period.
Public dollars diverted to private schools sidesteps oversight, accountability, or transparency.

"Choosing to divert money to independent school capital projects at a time the government is facing a deficit budget is baffling, said Wing Li, communications director for Support Our Students (SOS) Alberta, a public education advocacy organization.

“We find it egregious,” Li said. “When you look at the tale of two systems, the public system needs resources.”

Li said the money could be paying for assets the public does not own or can’t access. She said she thinks once public funding of independent school construction is normalized, the government may expand the practice.

She said the public school system should be funded adequately to serve students with disabilities so they don’t feel compelled to turn to private options."

The Alberta government is now egregiously diverting additional public funds for CONSTRUCTION of private school buildings that keep the public out. So the public pays without access - how is this for CHOICE??
