September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today, we remember the children who never made it home, the Survivors who did, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of residential schools.

Truth and reconciliation is more than one day, and it is more than wearing orange. It begins with listening, learning, remembering and being willing to have conversations that are sometimes difficult.

As Métis people, we know that our own families and communities have also carried the effects of residential schools, day schools, the Sixties Scoop and generations of policies that tried to separate Indigenous people from their families, cultures and identities.

But our story is also one of strength.

Our languages are being spoken. Our songs are being sung. Our young people are learning who they are. Our Elders are sharing what they know. And our communities continue to gather, rebuild and move forward together.

Today, we honour those who came before us, those who survived, and those who are helping the next generation carry our culture forward.

Every Child Matters.

What a great night, Captain Carmen and Yvonne Poitras introduced us to author Elder Maria Campbell.

The elder has done a lot for the Metis people and shared her words all over the world.

It was an honor to meet her in person and I am grateful for the experience 🙏❤️

Of course I also had the best time hanging out with all the other amazing people that lift up our community right here at home.

Cheryl Ann Oberg
Candidate for Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5 Council

My Métis roots run through generations, with family connections across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. My ancestral family names include Dumont, Sarcee, Lussier, Bruneau, Cardinal and Ladouceur, and I take great pride in the strength, leadership and resilience passed down through my family.

Today, I am the matriarch of my own Métis family, a role that means a great deal to me. I am a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and throughout my life one thing has remained constant: I believe in showing up for people.

Community service has been at the heart of much of my life. I have been an entrepreneur, manager, educator, professional speaker, board member and volunteer, and I spent 19 years with Alberta Children's Hospital as a therapeutic clown.

Before that became my professional role, I volunteered as a Caring Clown at the hospital. My work has allowed me to connect with children, families, seniors and people facing some of life's most difficult moments.

I've also spent decades volunteering with organizations supporting children, families, healthcare and community. Along the way, I've been fortunate to receive recognition for that service, including being named a Woman of Vision, receiving a FLARE Magazine Community & Leadership Volunteer Award, an Alberta Centennial Medal, and provincial recognition for volunteer service.

But the recognition isn't what has kept me involved. It's the people.
I've learned that building community often starts with something very simple: being present, listening, making people feel welcome and finding ways to bring people together. Sometimes even a little laughter can make a difference.

I'm running for Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5 Council because I want to bring that lifetime of experience and service to my Métis community. I want to help build connections and programs that strengthen and empower our children, youth, seniors, families and individual citizens. I want to listen to our citizens, bring their voices to the Council table and work collaboratively with the District 5 team.

I bring experience in leadership, communication, education, business and community service, but I also bring creativity, energy and a belief that strong communities are built through relationships.

After a lifetime of helping people find reasons to smile, I'm excited about the opportunity to roll up my sleeves and help build something together here at home in District 5.

My momma was Red River Métis and came from the village of Winnipegosis, Manitoba. I was born in Burnaby, BC, and my family moved to Calgary when I was three. Calgary has been home ever since.

Some of my strongest memories come from spending summers with my grandparents. There was no running water, so I hauled drinking water from the well and water from the rain barrel for washing and bath day. I learned to harvest berries, ride horses, cut wood, build a fire, fish, clean what we caught, eat wild meat, shoot a .22 and even drive a tractor. But what I remember most is family, my grandfather playing the fiddle, Grandma baking bannock, everyone dancing in the kitchen, and us kids outside catching fireflies and frogs. And I'll never forget Auntie Mary's sweet-and-sour moose meat!

Growing up, I didn't realize how many Métis families we knew because nobody talked much about it. I was teased in school, and Momma told me not to say anything about being Métis. At my grandparents' home, though, I could simply be myself. That experience is part of why community means so much to me today. I work with young children and try to make every moment a teaching opportunity. I take them to Métis gatherings whenever possible so they can experience our culture for themselves.

I also volunteer at Métis events and use my business marketing education wherever I can help. Momma taught us something simple: if you can help, you help. I'm running for Council because I want our citizens to have opportunities to connect with their culture and with each other. I want our young people to grow up proud of who they are, and I want our Elders to have more opportunities to gather, socialize, share their knowledge and remain an active part of our community.

I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get things done. I enjoy organizing, talking with people and learning more about our culture. The more I learn, the more I understand the things I was taught growing up. If elected, I want to help build a District where people feel connected and welcome, where we listen to our Elders and citizens, and where Council remains accountable to the community it serves. Most of all, I want to help keep Calgary Nose Hill District 5 connected, accountable and moving forward together.
