Volunteer Spotlight: Barb Whitworth

Barb. You don’t know her? Then you don’t know the Able Sail Association. This gal is a master of the reservoir, and our go to boat fixer upper. Not to mention a pro with backing up the trailer and making decals.

When not on the sailboat, Barb has a history of being a nurse and a professor at the University of Calgary, always seeming to help those around her.

Volunteer Spotlight: Josh Doran

Josh, a young bright light on our team, never fails to make our sailors smile. This boy could not be more helpful, and his time on the job is truly appreciated.

Despite his youthfulness, he’s been a sailor for 8 years. Now, what does this young prodigy do in his free time? He takes on the slopes at Lake Louise and freestyle skis!

Volunteer Spotlight: Ryan Shannon

“Just an average Joe making the world a better place”

Ryan, possibly the most legendary of our volunteers, puts in the WORK here at the ASAA. From training the employees to back up the trailer, to taking our sailors for the boat ride of their life.

Rumour has it, however, that Ryan has quite the brain on him, especially when it comes to computers and software. From getting techy with computer hardware and coding, to working as a support worker for 15 years, and having quite the history of helping out the ASAA, we wonder if there’s anything Ryan cannot do!

Volunteer Spotlight: Roman Kierzek

Roman never fails to take charge of the boat and take his crew for an adventurous, yet therapeutic ride.

His origin as a sailor takes us back to Lac Deschênes, Ottawa. Turns out the first boat he ever sailed was a Sonar. No wonder he’s such a natural! The only difference is that the Glenmore Reservoir lacks the mysterious logs from when Lac Deschênes was used as a highway for harvesting logs to the saw mills.

Rumour has it, these logs will float up, seemingly aiming for your sailboat, and force you to tack when you least expect it! What a way to learn how to sail.

🌊⛵ A day on the water to remember!

Recently, members of our DP2 group traded their usual routine for a day on the water with the Able Sail Association of Alberta.

With life jackets buckled and sailboats waiting at the dock, the group enjoyed sunshine, fresh air, and the chance to try something a little different while taking in the views from Glenmore Reservoir.

A huge thank you to Able Sail Association of Alberta for creating inclusive opportunities that make adventure accessible to everyone.⛵💙
