New Taliban laws provide further evidence that child marriage is permitted in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's justice ministry recently published Decree No. 18 on "judicial separation of spouses", setting out rules for separation of a married couple. Provisions in this decree also include reference to child brides, demonstrating that child marriage is permitted.

Dr. Lauryn Oates spoke with CJOB Winnipeg about these new, egregious laws and what they mean for Afghan girls.

For many students, career fairs are a chance to imagine what the future could look like. But for girls in Afghanistan facing barriers to education and opportunity, that future can often feel uncertain.

Recently, grade 10 Darakht-e Danesh Classroom students took part in a virtual career fair where they heard from professionals in fields ranging from Health and Science to Architecture, Business, Communications, and Computer Science.

Through honest storytelling, students learned not only about careers, but about the journeys, challenges, and choices behind them.

These conversations opened doors to futures many students had never imagined before — reminding them that even in the face of obstacles, new paths are possible.

Thank you to our speakers and to Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada for supporting opportunities that empower students to dream, explore, and shape their futures.

When millions of Afghan women and girls are denied their right to learn, solidarity matters.

This past weekend, individuals, families, schools, workplaces, and community groups across Canada came together in support of Afghan women and girls and their right to learn.

Whether you walked, volunteered, donated, organized an event, shared our message, or encouraged others to get involved, thank you. Your support helped raise awareness, spark conversations, and show Afghan women and girls that people across Canada stand with them.

Thank you for standing with Afghan women and girls and helping ensure their voices are heard.

There’s something powerful about gathering around a table. Sharing food sparks connection, builds community, and opens the door to meaningful conversations. Now, it can also help create brighter futures for Afghan women and girls.

Hosting a Breaking Bread event is a simple and joyful way to show solidarity while raising funds to support educational opportunities for Afghan women and girls.

No two Breaking Bread events are the same. Whether it’s a dinner with friends, a picnic in a park, or a community-wide potluck, you can bring your own creativity, traditions, and spirit to make it uniquely yours.

Start planning with the Breaking Bread toolkit:

Last year, communities across Canada came together in solidarity with Afghan women and girls through the Red Pashmina Walk.

This year, we’re inviting you to join us again.

On May 30 and 31, participants across the country will wear red scarves and walk through their communities with one clear message: Afghan women and girls deserve the right to learn.

As we look back on last year’s powerful moments, we hope you’ll be part of this year’s movement.

Join a walk in your city, bring friends and family, and help raise awareness for the millions of Afghan women and girls denied access to education.

Teacher professional development (TPD) in refugee settings is critical for supporting both educator quality and student outcomes in challenging environments.

To identify methods of scaling effective TPD approaches, Right to Learn Afghanistan, together with the Empowering Teachers Initiative (ETI) recently convened the first Expert Session on Scaling Quality Professional Learning for Refugee Educators.

Right to Learn is thankful to be a part of this innovative community of partners who are forging new pathways of quality learning in emergency settings.

How do we reimagine what’s possible when millions of Afghan girls are banned from school and women are systematically denied the right to education?

Liza Worthington, Board Chair for Right to Learn Afghanistan, writes,

“Reimagining What Is Possible is more than a theme; it is the daily work of Right to Learn.

In some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, Afghan women and girls are being denied fundamental rights, including the right to education. In response, we continue to adapt and innovate, opening new pathways that reconnect women and girls with learning, opportunity, and the futures they deserve.

Thanks to your support, 644 students participated in accredited education through our Darakht-e Danesh online high school (recently named as one of the top 50 Global Schools); 1,400 women received scholarships and devices to continue their studies; and 200 Afghans received personalized guidance to navigate complex resettlement systems. Together, we strengthened global advocacy through 105 campaigns and events and expanded access to knowledge by adding a tenth language and 715 new books to our online library.

This year’s Annual Report is presented in a new, fully digital format, reflecting our ongoing commitment to innovation and accessibility. I invite you to explore the 2025 Annual Impact Report and see how, together, we are reimagining what is possible.”
