This is not a statement we ever expected to have to make.
SAFE Canada is aware of the recent reports concerning criminal charges brought against the founder of KidsPlay Foundation.
Over the course of our relationship with KidsPlay, our experience has primarily been with the Alberta chapter and with individuals who have shown us genuine care for their communities, their youth and the work they do. We want to acknowledge that, because the actions or allegations involving one individual should not erase the positive work of the many people who have given their time and hearts to helping others.
At the same time, SAFE Canada has a responsibility to the people who place their trust in us. Honesty and transparency are an integral part of who we are.
Our organization exists to stand beside first responders, their families and our communities, and with that comes a responsibility to protect the integrity of our mission and the relationships we build around it.
After careful consideration, SAFE Canada has made the difficult decision to suspend our formal partnership with KidsPlay Foundation at this time.
By no means is this a statement of guilt and we fully respect that the legal process must be allowed to take its course. It is simply the decision we believe is right for SAFE and for the community we are entrusted to represent.
We have spoken directly with leadership from KidsPlay Alberta, and we are grateful for the understanding and respect shown during what is undoubtedly a very difficult situation for everyone involved.
There are real people behind every organization — volunteers, families, supporters and community members — and we believe it is important to remember that during moments like this.
SAFE will continue moving forward with the same purpose we have always had: supporting those who serve our communities, their families, and the people who stand beside them.
