UNA celebrates National Indigenous History Month
By United Nurses of Alberta

United Nurses of Alberta celebrates National Indigenous History Month in June by honouring the contributions made by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to our union, the nursing profession, our province and Canada.

UNA is proud to represent many nurses of Indigenous heritage, including those employed by the Blood Tribe Department of Health in Stand Off, near Cardston, and by Aakom Kiyii Health Services of the Piikani Nation at Brocket.

We encourage UNA members to learn more about the unique experiences, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Indigenous peoples this month and throughout the year.

This annual month-long recognition dates back to 2009, when the House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month. The name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017. The observance provides an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about Indigenous people and show their respect for their vast contribution to Canada.

Major protests planned around Alberta this Friday

Thousands expected as Albertans mobilize in 20 actions across the province.
EDMONTON – Momentum is building towards the Province-wide Day of Protest, this Friday, May 29 – with organizers predicting that thousands of Albertans will participate in events in multiple towns and cities across the province.

The Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) has acted as the catalyst for the Day of Protest, bringing together labour and non-labour groups and individuals to support a growing protest movement.

“What are we protesting? Just look around. We’re protesting all of it,” says AFL president Gil McGowan.

“This government will cave to separatist con men and foreign-influenced disinformation before it will stand up for everyday Albertans. Smith’s separatist referendum is a divide-and-distract tactic – and Albertans can see through it. That’s what this Day of Protest is about: a desperate, weak, and corrupt government that doesn’t work for the people.”

Protest participants are being encouraged to show up with their signs, flags, and friends to oppose the provincial government on multiple issues, including; separatism, two-tier health care, under-funding and under-staffing of key public services, coal mining in the Rockies, data centre expansion, foreign interference, digital disinformation, attacks on worker rights and human rights, as well as disrespect for the courts and dangerous democratic backsliding by the Smith government.

There are 20 Day of Protest actions planned in 15 communities. A full listing can be found at www.FightBackNow.ca. Media are welcome and encouraged to attend events in their communities.

McGowan and AFL secretary treasurer Cori Longo will attend what are expected to be the two largest demonstrations:

March and rally in downtown Edmonton (11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., from the Centennial Plaza past the Edmonton Convention Centre on Jasper Avenue).
The “Rise Up” rally at Riley Park in Calgary, starting at 5:30 p.m..
McGowan and Longo will be available at both events to speak to media. Interviews can also be arranged at the contact named below.

Welcome to Sunday Spotlight: Where We Highlight Secitons of YOUR contract for better Understanding.

Today's Spotlight: Members of the UNA bargaining units at RCIF eligible rural or remote sites under Provincial Collective Agreement can apply for one-time lump sum payment
By United Nurses of Alberta

Payments recognize nurses’ commitment to rural and remote health care

“To receive the grant, eligible employees must commit to continued service at an RCIF-eligible rural or remote site for one year.”

Members of United Nurses of Alberta bargaining units covered by the Provincial Collective Agreement who provide service at eligible rural or remote worksites in Alberta have until September 30 to apply for the RCIF Retention Recognition Incentive, a one-time lump-sum payment recognizing their continued commitment and dedication to providing health care in rural or remote communities.

Payment amounts – set in three tiers of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 – are based on each employee’s years of service at rural or remote worksites that are eligible under the Rural Capacity Investment Fund (RCIF). A list of eligible worksites is found here.

To receive the grant, eligible employees must commit to continued service at an RCIF-eligible rural or remote site for one year. A Return for Service Agreement will commence on the date the employee’s application is approved.

Before applying, nurses must complete an eligibility screening. Those who meet the full requirements will be directed to the full application.

Read More here ---->. www.una.ca/1792/rcif-alberta-nurses

Additional information is found at www.rcif-una.ca/. That site will be updated periodically with new information, for example, how eligible employees on leave of absence may apply.
