🐝 LATE SEPTEMBER GARDEN WORKER BEE NIGHT 🌻

Come join us for our next Garden Worker Bee Night!

We’ll be tackling some general garden maintenance like mowing, trimming and weeding and getting a few jobs crossed off the garden to-do list as we head toward the end of the season.

🌱 When: Wednesday, September 23rd, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

📍 Where: Acadia Community Garden, 332 94 Ave SE, Calgary

Whether you can stay for the whole time or just lend a hand for a little while, we’d love to see you. Many hands make light work — and our Worker Bees are also a great chance to meet your fellow gardeners, catch up and spend some time together in the garden.

Our garden has had yet another incident of vandalism/theft over the long weekend.

Several cauliflower plants were slashed, smashed, and thrown all over the garden. 3 rented beds had pumpkins or squash vines, with unripe, immature produce taken from them and or/stolen or smashed.

These plants were planted back in May and were just now producing produce that would have been ready to harvest at the end of this month.

A reminder that our beds are rented, paid for and cared for by member families in the community. They are NOT a 'help yourself.' Many families depend on this food to supplement their groceries. Our rented beds have very clear signage on them. If you didn’t plant it, you don’t pick it.

However, we DO have 4 beds that are clearly marked ‘help yourself’ with signage, that YOU CAN pick from.

PLEASE NOTE - Surveillance cameras are now installed and in use at the garden due to all of the incidents over the summer.

Over the last 24 hours, our community garden was vandalized by a group of young preteens/teens.

Vegetables were pulled and smashed, and property was destroyed.

Our members are families in the community.

We are people of all ages, seniors and low-income families who rely on this garden for both the food and community it provides.

We grow food for donation to the Calgary Food Bank and other community organizations.

It is absolutely heartbreaking to see months of work thoughtlessly destroyed right before harvest.

If you live in the community or our neighbouring communities, please spread the word to your friends and neighbours, and talk to your kids.
