Circularity in Action | Youth En Route: Pedaling Youth Forward Through Repair & Reuse

At Earth Hour held by The Arusha Centre at Calgary Public Library-Central Library last Saturday, the Recycling Council of Alberta connected with our member Youth En Route and learned about their collaboration with Bathtub Bikes to grow a new community, Bike Hub.

The Bike Hub is open to the community through a simple, accessible model—$20/year membership provides access to tools, space, and guidance to repair your own bike (with flexibility to ensure access for all).

By joining, donating, or spreading the word, you’re helping keep more bikes 🚲 —and people—moving.

Catching up on Days 11 and 12 of our 12 days of circularity, our last two topics are about Leftovers and Gift Giving.

Ideas around leftovers have a main goal of minimizing waste, so things you can do is make sure you cook only as much as your guests need, and find ways to maximize any leftovers by providing to-go containers for guests to take leftovers home with them (washing those take-away containers from past food orders are perfect), and making sure to freeze, reuse or as a last resort compost your leftovers.

For Gift Giving, the most circular options are to give gifts that don't require packaging, which can include sharing time, sharing skills, sharing an experience, giving a hug or other care. You can also gift your time to good causes and volunteer efforts.

Share your own final ideas around any of our circular days, and make sure to keep thinking circular year round! Happy holidays!🎄

For Day 10 of 12 we are talking about feasting! Who doesn't enjoy a good meal? Well many people may not realize that you can make your dinners more circular just by doing a little bit of proactive planning such as making sure to buy from local producers and focus on food that is in season. You can also limit your food waste by doing some portion calculations ahead to minimize the amount of leftovers and hopefully limit the amount of food that may just get thrown out. If you do have leftovers, making sure you have to-go containers for people to take leftovers home and composting anything that does go bad are things to consider. And some obvious choices are to not use plastic cutlery, cups and paper plates as that will certainly add unwanted waste to your celebration. What other ideas do you have for making feasting more circular? Let us know in the comments!

Day 9 of our 12 days of circularity is around how to make your gift wrapping more circular. Of course the best choice is not to have to gift wrap at all, which ties in well with picking gifts that are experiences, time or skill sharing. But if you do have something and need to wrap it, you can find innovative ways to limit waste by making sure your wrap is multipurpose, such as using a towel, scarf, pillowcase or reusable bag instead of gift wrap that would otherwise be thrown away. And another option might be to reuse paper bags, wrap from flower bouquets, or tissue paper to wrap. When you use materials that can easily be recycled or composted, then you are helping to make your choices more circular. Feel free to share your own cool ideas around circular gift wrap in the comments!

Sorry we missed Day 7, so will do Days 7 and 8 together. When thinking about centerpieces, or other table adornment for when you are hosting, some circular choices can include using cloth napkins that can be laundered and used again and again. Centerpieces can be made of household decor you have around, either decorations, natural elements such as pinecones or tree boughs, or paper origami designs are fun too.

When thinking about gift giving, it's true that it's the thought behind the gift that matters more than the gift itself, and gifts that can be more circular include experiences, sharing of time, skills, food (baking!) or things other than material items that may just end up being regifted anyways. Putting a bit of thought and a personal touch to your gift makes it all that more valuable. Feel free to share other tips on what you have done to make your centerpieces and gift giving more circular in the comments below!

Day 6 of our 12 days of circularity is around trees and other plants. If you celebrate the season with a tree, there are options for how to make your holiday more circular, either by using a live tree or plant that can be enjoyed after the season is over, a locally grown option can also be better, and using natural decorations, similar to what we talked about in Day 2, are great choices. If you are not able to use a live tree or plant, you can look at artificial options, but just remember that love things last, so make sure to pick something durable that can be used year after year rather than thrown out prematurely. One option I do for our household, is use the same wooden cutout tree and decorate it with the same ornaments and lights I've had year after year. Share your own ideas around making your tree and plant options more circular in the comments below!

Day 5 of our 12 days of circularity is about cleaning. We tend to want to have a home that is s**c and span for the holidays, and there are many options for what to use for cleaning products. Some circular choices you can consider include using reusable cleaning cloths or fabric rags instead of paper towel or cleaning wipes, you can use natural cleaning ingredients such as baking soda, lemon and vinegar instead of chemicals. You can also buy your cleaning products in bulk (including baking soda and vinegar) from refilleries in town, such as Canary Goods and . Feel free to share other tips in the comments below!

Day 4 of our 12 days of circularity is around fashion. Everyone wants to look nice or festive for special parties and celebrations, but that doesn't mean you have to default to buying a new outfit. Jazz up a past outfit by accessorizing differently, either with items you already have or with items you borrow from a friend. Make sure to make your clothes last by mending or repairing them. And if you must have a new item, consider thrifting or upcycling. I'm sure many of you may have your own tips and tricks so feel free to share below in the comments!

Day 3 of our 12 days of circularity is around cards. Again, the best choice is to find alternate ways to deliver your well wishes without a card, and things you can do instead include reaching out to connect with loved ones either in person for a coffee, by phone, virtually, or by email. However, if you still want to send a physical card, think of ways to reuse old cards, use materials that are able to decompose (like paper rather than foil or plastic wrapped cards), supporting local card makers rather than buying big box items, hand delivering cards rather than mailing. There are many options to consider to make your cards more circular. Feel free to share other ideas in the comments!
