On May 12th, Kirby ‘The Beaver Guy’ of You Betula Environmental Inc., a professional biologist from Lethbridge, and his field staff installed multiple beaver flood prevention structures at the trail crossing in Grey Park Natural Area in Diamond Valley. Dams within the culverts were taken apart the same way beavers built them: one armful of sticks and mud at a time.

The Town of Diamond Valley is supportive of beaver coexistence efforts and assisted with the installation by temporarily closing the trail and providing safe access into the site. Western Sky Land Trust provided financial support for the project and a landowner coexistence grant from The Beaver Institute, available to You Betula as a BeaverCORPS member, is also expected to further offset project costs.

Projects like this are incredibly valuable. The benefits of living alongside beavers far outweigh the costs. Beavers create or enhance wetlands that filter water, support hundreds of other species, and store water on the landscape when we need it most. These installations improve safety for both park users and the beavers themselves. There is no reason to remove beavers as wetland co-managers when cost-effective and proven coexistence solutions exist. The installations today are a great example of applied science and non-lethal beaver management in action. You Betula Solves Dam Problems and looks forward to revisiting the site in the future to further public outreach and provide additional hands-on training for project partners.
