I have been fortunate to work with brilliant students worldwide and I am beyond happy with how they have helped Unmasking so we can be a bigger pebble.

I am delighted to share that we have successfully completed the Leeds Global Industry Project by Practera. Over the last few weeks, our team, Nomad Consulting, had the opportunity to work with our client, Diane Colton, founder of Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer. Her organisation is dedicated to...

Radon testing and who and why you should get your test kits from Evict Radon National Study.

Hi I am a patient advocate for cancer of the lungs in Canada. We are starting to see quite a bit on both social and regular media about radon. Everyone is promoting, selling or lending kits.

I want to present another option which is purchasing your kit from the Evict Radon National Study. The kits are sold at cost and the research organization makes zero $ from this.

Evict Radon for over 10 years has been leading the charge and research on radon and it's effect. They are continuing to do so in a much bigger way and are changing the landscape of cancer of the lungs around the world; not just in Canada.

Their research will have far reaching benefits to everyone, with hopefully a genetic biomarker specific to it, which will allow for drug development specific to that. By the nature of their work it will change the number of people being diagnosed with cancer of the lungs, prevention is one of the biggest deterrents for cancer of the lungs. Testing will help to ensure it does not happen to you. Lung cancer is truly not about smoking but about what gets in your lungs

The kits being sold by Evict Radon National Study are the only ones where the data will be sent to the study, none of the other kits do that which means vital data is being lost which will make a difference.

You hear sayings about lung cancer but truly anyone can get it and it is now showing up in younger people all the time. It has an impact on both non smokers and those who smoke

It has an impact on those currently living with lung cancer as well.

We all get to control the narrative of our lives, this is an easy one.

test now so that you get a brilliant tomorrow.

All Evict Radon National Study Test Kit Results are Used to Understand How Our Home Environment Influences Radon Exposure.
With your home radon result, we are able to:
Better protect Canadians from the harmful effects of radon gas exposure
Understand why certain properties have higher or lower radon compared to others
Work towards solutions that mean lower radon for everyone
Determine what behaviours modify our radon exposure
Determine the best pathway forward for best radon testing in Canada

Our current and past Evict Radon research participants have contributed to new ground-breaking research exposing Canada’s radon problem. Their contribution is helping us accomplish our mission to ‘evict’ radon from our homes and prevent future cases of radon-induced lung cancer.

Key Findings from our research:
1. All of Canada is at risk for high radon
With >30,000 (as of early 2022) long term residential radon tests from all across Canada, there is no ‘radon free’ areas of Canada. All Canadians properties have the potential to have high radon. What makes the difference, is if a building can capture and concentrate radon to unnaturally high levels.

This means that only way to know if your property has a radon problem is to test.

2. Radon exposure in Canada is increasingly uniform across the year
We have found that the existing dogma – that radon is always highest during winter heating months no longer applies in the Canadian context. Indeed, nearly half of residences we examined showed consistent radon all year, and a quarter demonstrated higher radon levels in summer. We are working towards understanding why this is now.

We speculate that this trend may be another consequence of the rising air-tightness of buildings in the region, but that this is also coupled with the growing prevalence of air conditioning units.

3. Short-term radon test kits (less than 90 days) are not reliable
Findings show radon tests of less than 90 days are imprecise in measuring radon gas exposure up to 99 percent of the time. The implications are likely to impact the home inspection and real estate industry, where adoption of short term testing in Canada has begun. We conclude that short-term testing should, under no circumstances, be used as a basis for long term radon exposure estimates

4. Our radon problem in Canada is, unfortunately, getting worse
We find a troubling, progressive increase in radon exposure within the modern residential environment in Canada. We show that the relative ‘modernity’ of residential environment strongly impacts radon exposure, with newer homes containing greater and greater radon.

5. Alberta and Saskatchewan are home to the 2nd most radon-exposed population on Earth
Of 11,727 residential long-term radon tests conducted between 2010-2018 in Alberta and Saskatchewan, 55% were ≥100Bq/m3 and 17.8% were ≥200Bq/m3, the maximum tolerated exposure limit for Canada. Comparison to global radon levels this region encompasses one of the most radon-exposed large populations mapped to date.

6. Younger Adults and Children are at the greatest risk for high radon exposure
Our 2021 study used >18,970 long term residential radon tests and reported occupancy trends (i.e. how often and how long individuals stayed within their residence) to find that our radon exposure is occurring at levels known to cause cancer. When comparing the ages and number of minors within a property, the highest indoor radon levels also had the youngest average age and greatest number of minors. This is concerning as younger individuals, especially children, are the most sensitive to the cancer causing effects of radon.

Now Recruiting Participants for our "Disability" Study

Help Canadian researchers investigate how radon impacts people experiencing disability and their caregivers.

Go to the Evict Radon National Study and go to the kit tab

The Radon Exposure and Disability Study explores how radon impacts populations in Canada, including people who are living with disabilities, including hearing, vision, mobility, pain, mental health, and more. To be eligible, selected participants must be experiencing a disability and have lived in their current residence for at least five years. If selected, we will send a radon test to your primary residence, which must remain in place for 120 days. Participants will be asked to complete three online surveys.

Dealing with a health illness, trauma, or disease is in itself a difficult journey to travel. Keeping track of everything we do, think, actions, inactions, and what others should know can turn into a veritable group of pages, books, storage areas, and others we forget. We have lists for different aspects of our lives, what we have, what we need, who to see, when to see them, questions, and thoughts.
I know I have been there myself on several different occasions. Having one place for everything, our personal road map to help manage this journey.
Launching at the end of September (currently only in paper format but will be available in October on Kindle Books) is the truly ultimate life planner-journal, A one-stop place where everything is kept at your fingertips. From contact info, to medical info, common terms for what ails you, a place to prepare for medical appointments, lists, calendar, journal, memories, words of wisdom, tasks, details of illness, life planning, and much more. The calendar comes for 3 months with refills available (book will be in binder form for the calendar, journal, questions pages and several others.
The guide will be available at the end of September the cost is $45, with 20% going to the charity of your choice, and the remainder is to cover costs and to support various initiatives by Unmasking.
This post will only be on this site, as we do not infringe on other FB sites or attempt to overstep their rules.
We will be taking pre-orders and various parts will be shown as Sept progresses.

Just launched the Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer YouTube Channel. This channel is part of the development of the Unmasking website, supporting patients, caregivers, and researchers across Canada. We are still under construction and will be adding news and content regularly. unmaskinglungcancer.org This website is thanks to the work of Qiudong Zhong, one of the University of Waterloo researchers from a project done by the UofW for Unmasking. You will be seeing messages regularly, and if you want to get involved, please private message me. There is a list of what we want to achieve. For patients by patients.
So much more to come.
