I was a professor for almost 40 years. It was a very significant portion of my life, time wise and growth wise. The bonds I created with all my students are relations I still continue to carry with me. I find that I now have pockets of families internationally - if I find myself getting bored in Calgary, I always have somewhere to go, someone to visit.
One time I was in New York visiting an old student. He said “you don’t wear jewelry or fancy clothes, I don’t know what to gift you”. I told him to get me a train ticket to the next city. In this way, I saw all of the US, Canada and the world.
Another time I was doing a radio interview in Toronto and an older man approached me; he touched my feet and I was so confused who he was. Turns out he was my student from two decades ago that I used to ‘discipline’ quite a bit. He thanked me for all that I had taught him - inside and outside the curriculum. The relations I have formed, the impacts I’ve had on my students and they’ve had on me… I would not change it for anything. Being a professor provided me with so many teachings in turn.
