What makes a great athlete?

It’s their work ethic. Their grit. Their vision on the court, their speed off the line, their dedication to the team, and how they show up for practice every single day.

What a great athlete is has absolutely nothing to do with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Being part of the 2SLGBTQI+ community doesn't change an athlete's stats, their hunger to win, or their ability to push through the grueling final minutes of a game.

When we allow outside noise or bias to dictate who gets to play, we don't just hurt athletes—we pull apart the integrity of the game itself. A scoreboard doesn't care who you love or how you identify; it only cares about the play you just made.

Drop a 🙌 if you believe the game should be open to anyone who is willing to put in the work! Be Proud of who you are!

The term gets thrown around a lot these days, but what does it actually look like on a sports team?

In sport, gaslighting happens when a person's reality, physical pain, or emotional safety is manipulated to protect someone else's ego or a club's reputation. It turns a legitimate concern into a personal flaw, forcing the person to doubt their own instincts. The worst outcome: it enables the abuser to continue.

Creating an inclusive environment isn’t just about kindness; it’s a direct commitment to athlete safety, mental well-being, and team success.

How can coaches, parents, and captains actively build a culture of belonging? It takes a deliberate playbook.

Here is your Safe Sport Allyship Checklist to implement this season:

📋 Clear Policies: Write anti-discrimination protections directly into your team’s code of conduct. Set zero-tolerance expectations for bullying at your very first parent/player meeting.
📋 Inclusive Language: Swap out gendered phrases for "team" or "athletes." Normalize asking for and respecting pronouns/chosen names.
📋 Education & Training: Equip staff and captains with allyship and mental health first aid training so they can confidently shut down toxic behavior or harmful language.
📋 Safe Spaces & Privacy: Advocate for gender-neutral changing options and set strict codes of conduct regarding locker room respect and privacy.
📋 Open Communication: Foster an environment where athletes trust you enough to have honest conversations. Consistently affirm that every athlete belongs.
