You’re their number one fan! Make sure they know it! 📣
What are your favorite ways to show your young athletes that you’re always in their corner?
Look through the options below: Which reflection question resonates most with you today?
1) Whose experience is this? Mine or theirs?
Do I know what matters most to them today? Am I treating them like a growing kid or an elite athlete? Keep the focus entirely on your child's journey, joy, and individual age-appropriate development rather than expectations, or comparisons.
2) Am I parenting or trying to coach?
Am I giving technical advice, or am I providing encouragement? Stay in your lane as a source of unconditional love, leaving tactical advice to the coach and officiating to the referee.
3) What is my body and voice communicating right now?
Is my behaviour making my child's experience better or worse? Would I be proud if my child heard everything I said today? Ensure your visible and audible cues project calmness, joy, and unwavering support regardless of the scoreboard or mistakes.
4)Do they feel valued for who they are, not how they perform?
Am I watching with love or expectations? Do they feel seen by me even when they make mistakes? Is their value tied to their performance? Separate your child's self-worth from their stats, wins, or errors on the field.
5) What energy am I bringing to the ride home?
Am I helping them love the game or resent it? Protect their long-term love for the game and ensure the car ride remains a safe, positive space. Ask them at the beginning of the season when and how they would like to talk about their game. Make them part of the process!
