Many people know these names.
Fewer people know their Caribbean roots‼️

This carousel highlights pioneers: influential figures across activism, music, sports, literature, business, and culture who are often taught as “American icons”, without acknowledging the Caribbean lineage that shaped their worldview, values, and leadership.

From civil rights leaders to cultural innovators, these individuals were FIRSTs in many ways - and they reflect the deep and ongoing impact of the Caribbean diaspora on U.S. history and global culture.

How Steelpan Started, as told by pan pioneer Oscar Pyle:

Oscar Pyle, also known as "Bogart," was an iconic captain of the Casablanca Steelband in Belmont, Trinidad, during the 1940s and 1950s.

He is regarded as a pioneering steelbandsman who played a crucial role in the early, tumultuous, and highly competitive era of steelpan.

Pyle active in the era when the instrument was evolving from everyday objects like oil drums, buckets, and dustbins.

He famously noted that the steelband was deeply rooted in politics, stating, "The steelband comes from the politics".

For his contribution to the development of the steelband, Pyle was awarded a Public Service Medal of Merit (Gold) in 1974.

Dr. Eric Williams and the 1973 Pan Consultation Programme: A Turning Point in Steelpan History

In 1973, Dr. Eric Williams, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, officially opened the Pan Consultation Programme, a landmark initiative in the history of the steelpan movement.

The national consultation on the Steelband brought together representatives from approximately 80 steelbands from across Trinidad and Tobago. This consultation was designed to confront pressing issues facing the steelband fraternity and the future of the instrument and its practitioners.

Originating in working-class communities and once viewed with social stigma, steelpan had started to gain broader recognition as a legitimate and important art form. However, despite its growing popularity, many steelbands struggled with essentials like sponsorship, revenue generation, contracts and organisational stability. It was within this environment that the Pan Consultation Programme convened to give the steelband community a platform to discuss structural support and strategic growth.

😊The steelpan is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century, and it was born right here in Trinidad and Tobago! 🇹🇹 It is our national instrument and a powerful symbol of Trinbagonian creativity, resilience, and unstoppable pride. From oil drums to global stages, the steelpan tells the story of our strength, our culture, and our sweet sound.
