La Leche League International expresses concern over the UN–Nestlé partnership
Call for end to corporate influence
For immediate release – La Leche League International (LLLI) joins the global call for the United Nations University – Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-IWEH) to end its collaboration with Nestlé, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of ultra-processed foods. Nestlé’s egregious unethical marketing activities of infant formula triggered the World Health Assembly to establish the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes in 1981, which is known as the International Code. We urge the UNU-IWEH not to collaborate with any corporation that fails to uphold the World Health Assembly’s International Code.
Spearheaded by the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), the call to suspend this partnership is firmly supported by LLLI.
Like the organizers of the open letter addressed to Prof. Kaveh Madani and Under-Secretary General Tshilidzi Marwala, La Leche League International believes that nutrition and public health education must remain independent from commercial interests.
It is well established that industry involvement in education not only compromises scientific integrity, but through direct marketing, also influences future health professionals.
LLLI joins the call for immediate termination of this partnership and invites organizations, parents, and health professionals to sign the IBFAN petition.
