About UELAC
The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians through knowledge of the past, in particular the history of the United Empire Loyalists and their contribution to the development of Canada. The United Empire Loyalists were generally those who had been settled in the thirteen colonies at the outbreak of the American Rev
olution, who remained loyal to and took up the Royal Standard, and who settled in what is now Canada at the end of the war. In addition to perhaps one Canadian in ten having a Loyalist ancestor, many others of Loyalist descent live elsewhere – in the United States, in commonwealth countries such as Australia and New Zealand, and scattered around the world. Our members are interested in the Loyalist era and descendants of those who left the United States after the American Revolution due to their adherence to the Unity of the Empire and support of British forces between 1776 and 1784. The Loyalists were people who remained loyal to the Crown during the American Revolution. They represented a variety of ethnic groups, religions and occupations. Because of their loyalty and their respect for law and order, many Loyalists were imprisoned, died or had their property confiscated. Loyalists left the American colonies to settle in the Maritimes, Quebec and what is now Ontario. Many also went to England and the West Indies and Bermuda. Since Alberta became a province in 1905 and major settlement started after and during the railroad construction, Loyalist descendants have relocated from the original family settlement areas in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Upper and Lower Canada and other areas of eastern Canada. UELAC Vision Statement
To enrich the lives of Canadians through fostering public awareness of our national history, and, in particular, of the United Empire Loyalists and their contributions to Canada, while also celebrating their memory and perpetuating their heritage as an integral part of the Canadian identity.
