Our office is closed today in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and to allow our staff to commemorate the day. We encourage our community to mark this day with us, to show their support for Indigenous peoples harmed by the legacy of residential schools, and to remember the children who never came home. We encourage our community to get involved in a meaningful way — by attending local events, wearing orange, visiting a library to learn the history, and reading the reports from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. https://nctr.ca/publications-and-reports/reports/

We return millions in unpaid wages, benefits, and entitlements to Alberta workers every year — at absolutely no cost to them. That's money workers rightfully deserve, but they may never have seen it without our support.

After years of putting money back where it belongs, all our work is really adding up.

If you were denied Employment Insurance and requested a reconsideration — whether with our support or on your own — Employment and Social Development Canada would like to hear from you. They are conducting a study to help inform future improvements to Employment Insurance services.

Interviews will take place virtually through Microsoft Teams. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Participants will not be asked to provide their Social Insurance Number, and taking part in this research will not affect their EI claim, benefits, or decision.

Participants will receive a cash card as a thank-you gift:
- $50 for a 30-minute interview
- $100 for a 60-minute interview

A big congratulations to The Educational Partnership Foundation who will be expanding their programs to help young people discover careers in the trades through this grant from the Government of Canada. Megan and Fiona were at the announcement yesterday at the Alberta Carpenters Training Centre in support the foundation's work.

Alberta workers take note!

If you are searching for a job, remember that you have the right to keep your personal information private throughout the hiring process.

When you're applying for jobs, you're protected. Employers cannot ask you about:
- Your physical or mental health conditions
- Medications or treatments you take
- Past workers' compensation claims or sick leaves
- Plans to have children
- Your sexual orientation

Your employer is obligated to keep you safe. Water, shade, rest breaks, and a plan for the hottest part of the day. And if conditions ever feel dangerous, you have the right to refuse unsafe work.

When your employment ends — whether you quit or were let go — there are rules that your employer must follow. If you've been working longer than 90 days:

1️⃣ You are entitled to at least one week's notice or termination pay (unless you quit/resigned).

2️⃣ You must be paid for every hour you worked, including overtime.

3️⃣ Your boss cannot reduce your rate of pay or make changes to the terms and conditions of your employment during the notice period.

4️⃣ Your boss cannot force you to use your vacation or banked overtime during the termination period (with some exceptions).

5️⃣ You may be entitled to vacation pay on your final paycheque.

These rules can feel overwhelming, especially if you are under a lot of stress. If you aren't sure whether you were compensated properly, or if your employer hasn't provided your final paycheque 31 days after your last day, we may be able to help.
