A Calgary-based organization supporting victims of domestic violence has issued a statement following the deaths of two children allegedly killed by their father in Calgary.
The case is being investigated by the Calgary Police Service, who say a 37-year-old man is in custody after allegedly killing his children and later contacting police. The identities of those involved are protected by a court-ordered publication ban.
Police said the accused called 911 and confessed, providing his location. He appeared in court and remains in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance.
Authorities confirmed the parents had been in a long-term relationship and separated less than a year ago. While there were prior police interactions at the residence, no charges had previously been laid and no violence involving the children had been reported.
In response, Ruth’s House, a shelter supporting Black victims of domestic violence, released a statement expressing grief and solidarity with the family and community.
The organization emphasized the need for stronger mental health supports, early intervention, and culturally appropriate services, noting that barriers such as stigma and isolation can prevent families from seeking help.
Community members gathered at a local church to mourn, describing the tragedy as deeply devastating.
Ruth’s House is urging governments, service providers, and community leaders to work together to improve access to support systems and prevent similar incidents in the future, while also asking the public to respect the family’s privacy during this time.
