A Calgary-based organization supporting victims of domestic violence has issued a statement following the deaths of two children allegedly killed by their father in Calgary.

The case is being investigated by the Calgary Police Service, who say a 37-year-old man is in custody after allegedly killing his children and later contacting police. The identities of those involved are protected by a court-ordered publication ban.

Police said the accused called 911 and confessed, providing his location. He appeared in court and remains in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance.

Authorities confirmed the parents had been in a long-term relationship and separated less than a year ago. While there were prior police interactions at the residence, no charges had previously been laid and no violence involving the children had been reported.

In response, Ruth’s House, a shelter supporting Black victims of domestic violence, released a statement expressing grief and solidarity with the family and community.

The organization emphasized the need for stronger mental health supports, early intervention, and culturally appropriate services, noting that barriers such as stigma and isolation can prevent families from seeking help.

Community members gathered at a local church to mourn, describing the tragedy as deeply devastating.

Ruth’s House is urging governments, service providers, and community leaders to work together to improve access to support systems and prevent similar incidents in the future, while also asking the public to respect the family’s privacy during this time.

We were honoured to attend the CPS 2026 Diversity Fair, a space filled with culture, connection, and meaningful conversations.

At Ruth’s House and Mandela House, we believe that education, awareness, and shared experiences are key to building stronger, more inclusive communities. Being surrounded by so many diverse voices and stories reminded us why this work matters.

Gratitude to everyone who continues to advocate, educate, and uplift diversity across Calgary. Together, we move forward.

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the people who continue to show up for others with compassion, care, and consistency.

At Ruth’s House, we honour the volunteers, supporters, and community members who help create stronger, safer, and more connected communities for women and families.

This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, reminds us that every act of service matters and that meaningful change begins when we come together in support of one another.

1 in 6 women experience abuse during pregnancy, a reality that cannot be ignored.

Black Maternal Health Week may be coming to a close, but this is not where the work ends.

Black mothers deserve to be heard, protected, and cared for every single day. For many, maternal health is deeply connected to domestic and family violence, impacting safety, mental health, and access to care.

The disparities are real, and so is our responsibility to act.
This is not a moment. It is a movement.

If you or someone you know needs support, especially in situations of domestic violence, you are not alone.

Raw. Real. Straight from the heart. 💛

At Ruth’s House Society and Mandela House , we are so proud to share that our Founder & Executive Director, Adekugbe, received the Woman of Impact Award and watching her accept it from our Board Chair, , was a moment none of us will forget.

This is what women empowerment looks like. Women lifting women. Women celebrating women. Women reminding each other that the work matters and so do you.

To Danisha, Karen, and Linda: thank you for your leadership and for showing up for communities every single day.
To every nominee in that room: this moment belongs to you too. The work you’re doing is seen, valued, and so deeply needed. You are proof that one woman’s courage gives another woman permission to rise.

But this award does not belong to one person. It belongs to every board member who believed in our vision. Every staff member who showed up day after day. Every volunteer who gave their time and heart. Every student who brought fresh energy and passion. Every community member who trusted us, supported us, and walked this journey with us.

This is Ruth’s House Society. This is what we are built on.
You are the reason we are here. You are the reason this moment exists.

Thank you to unitedwaycalgary for this honour and for continuing to champion women who are quietly changing the world.

Together, we continue. 🤝🏾✨

1 in 3 Black women report symptoms of postpartum depression, yet many do not receive the care they need.

Black maternal health is more than a statistic, it reflects real experiences shaped by systemic barriers, cultural stigma, and gaps in accessible, equitable care.

In Canada, Black women face higher risks of maternal health complications, while also navigating challenges like:
• Limited access to culturally competent care
• Distrust in healthcare systems due to lived experiences
• Stigma around mental health support
• Pressure to appear “strong” even when support is needed

This is why awareness matters. This is why conversation matters. And this is why access to safe, supportive spaces matters.

At Ruth’s House, we are committed to creating spaces where women feel seen, heard, and supported without judgment. As well support through different resources in Domestic Violence Cases.

You are not alone. Support is here.
