Have you seen our lemurs climbing in the Land of Lemurs walkthrough? Today, we're pawsing for a moment of appreciation and celebrating the hard work that goes into making this immersive habitat possible. 🫶

After a long winter of heavy snow and strong winds, the ropes in the outdoor lemur habitat start to sag from exposure until our incredible teams get to work tightening everything back into place. This year, the spring cleaning job came with an exciting first as our Habitat Horticulture Technician Brice put his new climbing certifications to the test. He confidently took to the ropes, becoming a key part of the effort to restore them to their proper tension. 💪 In the past, accessing these high lines required heavy equipment, making it more time-consuming and complex. Thanks to Brice's new certifications, the team is now able to work more efficiently and safely without the need for extra machinery, a testament to the impact of teamwork and training.

From the ground, it’s easy to underestimate just how massive these ropes are. Each one weighs many hundreds of pounds, making this far from a one-person job. It takes a coordinated team effort with many hands working together to pull out every bit of slack while carefully managing the sheer weight of the system. The end result? Taut ropes ready to support the lively activity from our lemurs! 🐾

Thank you to Brice and our Horticulture Habitats Team! 👏🌿

Today is one of our favourite days in June – we get to celebrate the birthday of our female bighorn sheep ‘June’! She is turning eight today! 🥳

In March, June returned to zoo grounds with male lamb ‘Chauncey’ after they spent some time bonding together at our offsite Archibald Biodiversity Centre (ABC). These two have a close bond, with Chauncey frequently going to June for comfort, but this young lamb is gaining confidence thanks to June's steady influence. 🥰

Stop by to wish June a happy birthday! 🐑

Puzzle feeders are one of our favourite kinds of enrichment around the zoo, and we love seeing the explore them to shake out some tasty snacks! 😋

Grizzly bears like male ‘Turner’ here are known for their long claws which for adults can be five to 10 centimetres in length. With their strong and dexterous claws, grizzly bears can grasp and manipulate objects, making fishing out snacks a breeze. 🐾

Stop by to meet our cubs! 🐻

Oh baby, we've got a birthday to celebrate! Our male Canada lynx 'Bebe' is turning 13 today! 🎉

Have you ever wondered what's the difference between a lynx and a bobcat? 🤔 One clue is in the tail! 👀 A lynx has a completely black-tipped tail, while a bobcat has a white ring below the black tip.

Stop by to wish Bebe a happy birthday! 🐈

Today’s theme is “if objects could speak” - and what better way to celebrate than by taking a look at our biofacts? 🔍

Our biofacts, also known as biological artifacts, are teaching tools that belong to our Educational Resource Collection, sponsored by ConocoPhillips. From skulls to pelts to feathers and 3D models, this collection of over 4,000 items invite us into the world of different plants and animals, showing incredible adaptations and sparking empathy for wildlife and wild places. 🫶 What’s your favourite biofact in our collection?

Be sure to look out for one of our Exploration Stations and explore some biofacts on your next visit! 👀

Get ready to ronne and celebrate – our male gentoo penguin ‘Ronne’ is turning six today! 🎉

Have you heard of gentoo-ification? 🤔 This is a term that scientists are using to describe the drastic changes of penguin populations in Antarctica. Gentoos are found on the Antarctic Peninsula, and as sea ice melts, gentoo penguins are spreading further south to areas where they have never been seen before. Penguins are an important indicator of ecosystem health, and the changes in where gentoo penguins are found is raising the alarm to protect the future of this habitat for all penguin species that call it home. 🐧

Whether you’re shopping sustainably for seafood or lowering your carbon footprint by dimming lights and turning down thermostats, you can make a happy hatchday for Ronne and a cooler future for all of our penguin pals. 🩵 Join us in wishing Ronne a happy hatchday!

As we prepare to welcome you to Asian Highlands, the first chapter of our Imagine Asia redevelopment, we’re going behind the scenes to check out how our red panda family is getting red-y! 😍

The refreshed red panda habitat is going to be home to a pawsitively thrilling new feature - a series of overhead transfers which means red pandas can walk above you! 🤯 This habitat furniture will be an enriching experience for our red pandas and will give you the chance to admire these animals from new angles. But we know you’re wondering - does this mean that a red panda is going to jump down or escape? The answer: no, of course not!

Red pandas are agile climbers, and this overhead log pathway is designed to be a calm travel route, with logs intentionally arranged without nearby features that would naturally encourage jumping or create a clear alternate destination. The height, positioning, width, and access points are all designed with a red panda’s natural movement patterns and safety in mind. In this back of house space, our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare team has been helping our red pandas to get familiar with this new feature by using logs that match the diameter and angle they will encounter when they move into their refreshed habitat. 🪵

Stay tuned as we count down to Imagine Asia’s opening in July and compliment our red pandas on their climbing skills in the comments! 🐾
