Compose yourself – it’s time to join us on a composting journey! 🌱

Have you ever wondered how composting happens at the zoo? In addition to our commercial composting through our three-stream bin system, a lot of the kitchen waste at the zoo ends up in our flower beds through our incredible composting system. Come check it out!

Members of our Horticulture team collect food scraps from our kitchens and take them to the Garden of Eatin’, located behind the ENMAX Conservatory. Here, kitchen waste is added to these giant composting bins. We add to these bins from early spring to fall, as proper decomposition typically requires temperatures around 55–65°C. The temperature can be checked with a composting thermometer! If temperatures are low, the bins may be rotated or more nitrogen-rich materials like freshly cut grass are added, and if they are too high, carbon-rich material like mulch may be added. Over the course of many months, our compost turns wonderfully nutritious and is added in spring to our perennial beds! 🌼

You know what they say – no one is happier than a hog in fresh mulch! 🪵

Fresh mulch is one of our favourite occasions, and this addition to habitats across the zoo makes for new substrate for hooves and paws, stimulating experiences, and scent-sational smells. 🐽 This morning, our sounder of red river hogs received fresh mulch in both the outdoor and indoor habitats. Our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare team ensured that mulch was piled up in the indoor habitat, which gives our hogs stimulating topographies, new sightlines, and of course, wonderful smells to roll around in! 🐗

This month celebrates the incredible work done by our Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs). Together, our team of three full-time registered veterinary technologists, one part-time veterinary technologist, and one on-call veterinary technologist bring decades of experience in caring for nearly 100 different species. We spoke with Carmen, one of our full-time RVTs, about what inspired her to take this incredible career path. 🩺
