The decision to eliminate the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and the Minister for People with Disabilities feels like a step backward. It’s frustrating and disappointing to see roles that were meant to protect and uplift marginalized communities being taken away.
Because of the funding from the Minister of Women and Gender Equality, we were able to create real, tangible support for our community. Through this support, Black Pride YYC built spaces where Black 2SLGBTQ+ folks could feel seen, celebrated, and supported. We launched an online resource hub, hosted TransConnect to center trans mental health, facilitated community needs assessment forums, we provided therapy and legal workshops for survivors of conversion therapy, and Black 2SLGBTQ+ anti-discrimination workshops. This is only a few of the impact these fundings have had on our community, and there is so much more to come this year.
Without these dedicated roles, who will fight for gender equity at the highest levels of government? Who will ensure that the unique challenges faced by our communities are prioritized instead of pushed aside? This is about real people, real struggles, and real harm that comes when leadership turns its back on those who need support the most.
