📢 New podcast, featuring Kerry Woodland, co-executive director of BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area BGCBigs!

In this conversation, Kristy and Kerry unpack the story behind BGCBigs, a rare Canadian amalgamation that brought together Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters in Edmonton to better serve the community.

BGCBigs is a rare Canadian model, created through an amalgamation of Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters in Edmonton, built around a simple question: what do kids need in our community?

That “better together” approach matters more than ever as families juggle work, schools face rising complexity, and youth mental health needs keep growing. For parents searching for safe, structured options and for community members looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities, the message is clear: connection is not a nice-to-have, it is a protective factor.

Kerry walks us through their youth continuum of services for ages 6 to 24, organized around three streams: mentoring, after-school programming, and youth engagement.

We get specific about how mentoring shows up today, from community matches to school-based mentoring with a literacy focus, teen mentors supporting younger students, and partnerships that bring mentoring into workplaces.

Because of this generosity, individuals and families in our community will continue to grow and succeed through programs, services, and spaces that create meaningful connection and a true bridge to belonging.

The support will:

1. Provide Hearts in Action Summer Camps with purposeful programming for the children and respite care for their parents.

2. Offer Social Nights for youth to connect, make new friends, and learn to socialize.

3. Launch a new Employment program that prepares adults to navigate the job market through resume building, interview skills, volunteer opportunities, and job search tips.

📢 New podcast, featuring Kerry Woodland, co-executive director of BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area 👉(BGCBigs)!

What if 1 hour a week could change a kid’s path? We talk school-based mentoring, teen mentors, and why those 3 to 6 pm hours matter. Kids don’t just need activities, they need connection.

Hear how BGCBigs supports youth ages 6 to 24 through mentoring, after-school programs, and job support. Listen to the conversation to hear about what real youth support looks like and why connection is a critical ingredient in healthy development.

In this conversation, Kristy and Kerry talk about the hours and seasons families worry about most: the after-school window between 3 and 6 pm, and summer break. Kerry explains how clubs provide safe spaces, snacks and meals when needed, recreation, cooking, academic support, and leadership experiences, plus summer camps with themed weeks and community outings.

For teens and young adults, youth engagement includes employment skill-building, fitness-focused programming, and Diversion First, a partnership designed to help youth under 18 step away from the justice system and toward community and growth.

If you’ve ever wondered where to volunteer in Edmonton, how to donate with impact, or how to find the right program for your child, this conversation maps the options clearly.
