Medway Community Forest Co-op

Medway Community Forest Co-op The mission of the Medway Community Forest Coop is to support local community through sustainable, diverse and ecologically-based forest management.

Community forests are a relatively new concept in Nova Scotia, but are widespread elsewhere in Canada. They have the following four attributes in common: local control, community benefits, multiple use, and forest stewardship that promotes long term forest health. In July 2013, the Department of Natural Resources called for more detailed community forest proposals on Crown land in south west Nova

Scotia. In October 2013, following a review of proposals from communities in South West Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources announced that the province will negotiate a three-year Crown land forest agreement with the Medway Community Forest Co-operative to establish Nova Scotia’s first community forest on 15,000 ha of forest in the Medway District of the former Bowater lands. The Medway Community Forest Co-operative is supported by several groups including the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, Wind Horse Woods, the North Queens Board of Trade, the Federation of Nova Scotia Woodland Owners, Nova Scotia Woodland Owners and Operators Association, Nova Scotia Co-operative Council, and the Ecology Action Centre, as well as numerous local community members, forestry contractors and local mills. The Co-operative plans to develop a locally governed, long-term, ecologically-based stewardship plan that allows multiple uses of a working forest, whilst nurturing new and innovative forest-based businesses that support the local economy.

We had a great time at our recent Learn to Fly Fish event, with about 20 people joining us on the water! 🎣

It was awesome to see so many folks getting out, learning new skills, and enjoying the outdoors together. A few fish were even caught along the way!

Big thanks to Loop Tackle and MacPherson's Fly and Tackle for donating our prizes, and to everyone who came out and made the day what it was.

This event couldn't have happened without the help of Kate and Scotty Sherin at the LaHave River Salmon Association, Thomas Sweeny with the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, Michael Martino and Cameron and Matt at MCFC!

The event filled up quickly, and we’re already looking forward to doing it again next year! Want first dibs when registration opens? Sign up for our e-newsletter: https://www.medwaycommunityforest.com/newsletter

After a bit of a rocky start last summer—with the woods closure just before opening—we’re excited to share that the Stave Lake Campground is getting ready to welcome visitors this season 🏕️

But before we can open, we need a hand getting it ready!

After a long, snowy winter, there’s some cleanup to do, and we’re looking for volunteers to join us on Saturday, May 9, to help bring the space back to life.

Tasks include:
🌳 Clearing brush
🌳 Walking trails to check for damage
🌳 Removing fallen trees and branches

If you’re looking for a way to get outside, meet great people, and contribute to a new community space, this is a great opportunity to get involved. If you're interested in joining us for the day, email us at [email protected].
