🍂🥾 Planning to walk off Thanksgiving dinner? Take safety with you.

After the turkey, stuffing and maybe one slice of pie too many, getting outside for some fresh air can be a pretty great way to spend part of the Thanksgiving weekend.
And with Nova Scotia’s fall colours putting on a show, there’s no shortage of reasons to hit the trails.

But autumn hiking comes with a few extra considerations. Daylight disappears earlier, temperatures can drop quickly, weather can change in a hurry and some of our most beautiful trails take you well beyond reliable cell service.

Before you head out:

🥾 Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return
🌦️ Check the weather and trail conditions
💧 Bring water and snacks, even for a short hike
🔦 Carry a flashlight or headlamp
🧥 Pack an extra layer
📱 Charge your phone before leaving
🗺️ Stay on marked trails and know your route

Whether you’re heading out for a serious hike or just trying to make room for leftover pie, a little planning can make sure the only thing you bring home is some great memories and even better fall photos.

Enjoy the colours. Enjoy the long weekend. And get home safely.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Nova Scotia RCMP. 🍁

It is with great sadness that SARVAC joins the Association québécoise des bénévoles en recherche et sauvetage in mourning the passing of Carol-Ann Namur, one of its pioneers and president of the volunteer group Sauvetage Canada Rescue.

Through her commitment, dedication, and many years of service to SARVAC and the volunteer search and rescue community, Carol-Ann left a lasting mark on GSAR in Québec and across Canada. She was instrumental in early discussions around the recognition of search and rescue volunteers and in highlighting the important role volunteers play in search and rescue and emergency management.

Carol-Ann was always willing to share her knowledge, offer guidance, and support other volunteer groups. Her generosity and dedication helped strengthen the community and those who continue to serve within it.

We will remember Carol-Ann for her passion for search and rescue, her commitment to volunteers, and all that she contributed to our organizations and our community.

Thank you, Carol-Ann, for everything you gave to the Canadian GSAR community. We are deeply grateful for your contributions, your guidance, and the lasting impact you made. We are fortunate that our paths crossed, and your memory will remain with us.

Our deepest sympathies to Carol-Ann’s family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Rest in peace, Carol-Ann. 🧡

Earlier this evening, our team was activated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia and Project Lifesaver Association of Nova Scotia to locate a vulnerable person who had wandered into the woods of the North Mountain. Our Electronic Search Specialists picked up a signal from his bracelet (it emits a radio signal every second) immediately upon arrival to the location, and after bushwhacking through the unforgiving terrain and vegetation for an hour, located him alive and well, and delivered him back home. This program works. If you have a loved one who is prone to wandering, please contact http://www.projectlifesaver.info/ .

Congrats!
