Many of you will remember the strong response when I first shared that CCTV cameras were being deployed across Caledon to support local policing and community safety.
At our recent General Committee meeting, Caledon OPP provided an update on how these cameras are now being used in real investigations. With support from the Town and a provincial grant of just over $254,000, a total of 78 cameras have been installed at 42 locations across Caledon since November 2025. These cameras are focused on helping police investigate serious incidents and are part of Ontario’s wider Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy.
This is an initiative I am happy to get behind and strongly support in my efforts to ensure our community’s are safe and that law enforcement has all the right tools to assist them.
At our meeting, OPP explained that footage from Caledon‑deployed cameras has already played a key role in investigations, including an arson case where the cameras helped establish timelines, track vehicle movements, and identify suspects, ultimately supporting a search warrant and arrests. They stressed that this technology is used for investigative purposes, not live monitoring of residents.
They also highlighted the CAMSafe program, which allows residents and businesses to voluntarily register their private security or doorbell cameras so officers know who to contact if they need footage after an incident. Police do not get live access to these cameras; registration simply helps them quickly locate potential video evidence when something happens.
I know many residents are interested in how these tools are being used and how they impact safety and privacy. If you have any questions or concerns about this program please contact the Caledon OPP at 905-584-2241 or reach out to me directly by phone or by email.
