For kids like Kev and his family, United Way BC support is critical during the summer months.

Over the past two years, our School’s Out Summer program has provided meals, grocery support, and connection—helping Kev stay engaged and nourished.

Consistency matters. Community matters.

The only thing cooler than the air flowing out of a new HVAC system in the summer is receiving a rebate for making the upgrade.

Today, the good folks from FortisBC, including Anthony McAleer, came by our United Way BC office in Burnaby to present us with a rebate cheque for $147,368.50. Thank you!

We also extend our thanks to Broadway Refrigeration, a key local business who did a terrific job for us and were key partners in ensuring the upgrade went smoothly. When good corporate partners like these two help us save money, it means we have more to support British Columbians across the province.

Thanks for uniting with us!

The Chinese Canadian community in Metro Vancouver has stepped up AGAIN to provide UWBC with a generous donation that we’ll use to support local organizations and communities impacted by wildfires.

The Vancouver Guandan Association – joined by some representatives of the Canadian Alliance of Chinese Associations – stopped by our Burnaby HQ today to present us with a $3,950 contribution. Thank you!

This comes fast on the heels of the Canadian Alliance of Chinese Associations and Feng Hong Family Foundation providing UWBC with both financial support and urgently needed supplies, which they transported to the Okanagan for residents affected by the wildfires.

Thank you to the Vancouver Guandan Association for your support!

The community continues to give in support of the wildfire effort.

DoorDash recently contributed $10,000 worth of gift certificates to UWBC – half allocated to Kelowna and half to Kamloops, which we distributed on Tuesday to the Kamloops Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

Will, the EOC’s Director, says they’ll be distributing these gift certificates to people who’ve recently been evacuated due to the wildfires and staying in hotels.

We knew there was a need when we learned that some hotels weren’t within walking distance of the restaurants where Emergency Support Services (ESS) vouchers could be redeemed.

So DoorDash stepped up with this solution. Cards in hand, evacuees can choose their own meals from a restaurant of their choice and have the food delivered directly to their hotel.

The gift certificates are a welcome line to food, comfort, respite – as well as everyday essentials, as they can also be used to order important items from supermarkets and drug stores.

Memory can be a powerful catalyst for change.

This Sunday, community members will gather alongside United Way BC, University of British Columbia researchers, the Climate Disaster Project, Seniors For Climate , and other community partners to honour the lives lost during BC's 2021 heat dome, reflect on the impacts of extreme heat, and contribute to a memorial art project that keeps these stories alive for future generations.

Through storytelling, shared experiences, and the creation of memorial "Heat Squares," this event offers a space for remembrance, healing, and community connection.

If you'd like to participate in this free event, join us at Creekside Community Centre from 1 to 5pm tomorrow afternoon. Light lunch will be provided!

Thank you to BC’s Chinese Canadian community in Metro Vancouver for uniting with us for wildfire relief and recovery. Their generous donation ($15,000!) helps us to support local organizations and communities providing immediate relief to evacuees, while also planning for longer-term recovery and resilience.

Beyond this $15K donation, the Canadian Alliance of Chinese Associations and Feng Hong Family Foundation also raised and transported more than $5,000 worth of urgently needed supplies to the Okanagan for residents affected by the wildfires.

Thank you so much for your support!

Learning how to prepare food is a life skill - and through United Way BC School’s Out Summer, kids are building confidence in the kitchen while having fun!

Recently, program participants got hands-on in the kitchen making homemade chicken strips coated with crunchy corn flakes! From preparing the ingredients and coating the chicken to cooking and enjoying their creation, kids had the chance to learn new skills, try something new, and make healthy choices.

Through activities like these, School’s Out Summer helps kids build confidence and practical skills they can carry with them beyond the summer.

Who knew learning life skills could be this delicious? 😋
