Meet Hayden. 🌟 For the past several summers, Hayden has volunteered at City Camp, helping campers build creative woodworking projects alongside his grandpa, Chuck. It has become a summer tradition that Hayden looks forward to every year.

One of the things Hayden enjoys most is meeting the kids and helping them bring their projects to life. From learning new skills to trying power tools for the very first time, he gets to see campers discover what they're capable of and take pride in what they've created. And of course, camp is full of silly, memorable moments too, including the time a camper accidentally called his grandpa "Chunk" instead of Chuck! They all had a good laugh.

Hayden says volunteering is both fun and rewarding, and we're so grateful that he chooses to spend part of his summer giving back. Volunteers like Hayden bring enthusiasm and expertise to help make special experiences like woodworking possible at City Camp, creating opportunities for campers to build confidence, learn new skills, and leave feeling strong, capable, and proud of what they've accomplished.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is impacted. For years, after Kennedy was diagnosed with leukemia at 17 months old, her family poured everything they had into navigating treatment and recovery. Every decision, every routine, every day revolved around keeping her safe and healthy.

Years later when Kennedy attended WCK City Camp for the first time, she found confidence, friendship, and independence. But the impact of camp extends far beyond the camper. "It did so much for our family too," shared Kennedy's mom, Elizabeth. "For us to be able to take Kennedy to City Camp for a week, we all got a moment to catch our breath. We needed that."

City Camp is a safe, medically-supervised space where kids can be kids. And for caregivers who have spent years carrying the weight of a childhood cancer diagnosis and all that follows, it can also be a rare opportunity to pause, recharge, and process everything they've been through.

This year's Summer City Camp theme is WCK Explorers! 🧭

Campers will embark on a week of adventure and discovery as they explore new lands and creatures, create nature-inspired art, and build their very own explorer tools through woodworking projects. Along the way, they'll make friends, try new things, and create memories that will last long after camp ends. We'll wrap up the week with a special showcase where caregivers can celebrate all the creativity, growth, and adventures their campers experienced.

We can't wait to welcome our campers next month and set off on this exciting journey together! πŸ’œβ˜€οΈ

At 17 months old, Kennedy was diagnosed with leukemia. What followed was years of treatment, uncertainty, and a journey her family will never forget. Through every challenge, they stayed focused on what mattered most: helping Kennedy thrive.

Years after treatment ended, Kennedy’s family was introduced to WCK through a long-term follow-up care nurse clinician, who encouraged them to try City Camp. Kennedy quickly found confidence and connection at camp, forming deep bonds and friendships, excitedly telling her parents about what she did at camp and her new β€œcamp besties.”

City Camp has made a profound impact on Kennedy, and her whole family. Read their full story πŸ‘‰ https://wckfoundation.ca/blog/kennedys-camp-experience/

πŸ’œ What is City Camp? πŸ’œ

WCK City Camp is the only medically-supervised day camp in B.C. for children and youth ages 5–12 affected by childhood cancer and blood disorders. Located in Surrey, close to the hospital, City Camp provides a safe, inclusive space where children on or off treatment can make friends, build confidence, try new activities, and simply have fun being kids. We also welcome siblings and bereaved siblings, because we know a diagnosis impacts the whole family.

For families navigating childhood cancer and blood disorders, so much of life can revolve around medical appointments, treatments, and uncertainty. City Camp offers something different: connection, belonging, and joy. And thanks to the generosity of our community, camp is provided at no cost to families.

Every child deserves the chance to just be a kid β˜€οΈ For many children, summer camp means making friends, having fun, and creating lifelong memories. But for families affected by childhood cancer and blood disorders, opportunities like these aren't always accessible. That's why City Camp exists.

As the only medically-supervised day camp of its kind in B.C., City Camp provides a safe, inclusive space where children can laugh, play, and connect with peers who understand their journey. It's a place where kids can simply be kids. And one of those kids is Kennedy. This month, in the lead up to our Summer City Camp, we'll be sharing more about Kennedy, her family's experience navigating childhood cancer, and the impact City Camp has made on all of their lives.

We hope you'll follow along, share these stories with your community, and help us send more kids to camp this summer. πŸ’œ
