Every week, our volunteers head to T8, the Oncology, Hematology and BMT floor at BC Children’s Hospital, to fill the WCK freezer with ready-to-heat meals for families. These meals are available 24/7, completely free of charge. And the reality is, most weeks when our volunteers arrive, the freezer looks a lot like the first picture - nearly empty. That's because food support is so needed by families.
For many families, this freezer is their first introduction to WCK and the support we offer. So many have told us that having access to these meals was a lifeline during their time at the hospital. We’re so grateful that, week after week, we can keep coming back to fill it. And we couldn’t do it without the generosity of our donors.
These meals provide so much more than nourishment. They offer comfort during long days at the hospital. They ease some of the financial burden that comes with spending weeks or months away from home. They provide a moment of relief, a familiar meal, and a small bit of normalcy in an incredibly difficult time. And they remind families that there is a community thinking about them, and that they are not alone.
