Kenyan championship runner Sabastian Sawe broke the two-hour marathon record in his run at the April 28th London Marathon. His time was 1:59:30, beating the previous record by 65 seconds. Sawe commented on how important audience support was for him as he entered the final phase of this challenging 26.2-mile run.

Second-place marathoner, Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, finished in 1:59:41, breaking the two-hour record a second time in the same race. A dramatic and exciting day for marathon followers.

In honour of Mandela Day on July 18, KEEF is proud to recognize the legacy of Nelson Mandela – a global advocate for justice. Mandela shared a special connection with Canada, becoming an Honourary Companion of the Order of Canada in 1998, the highest level in the Order. In 2001, he became the first living person to receive honourary Canadian citizenship, a testament to the profound impact of his leadership and humanitarian vision.

Established by the United Nations in 2009, Mandela Day is an international call to action for individuals and communities to make a positive difference through service, peacebuilding, social justice, reconciliation, and the celebration of cultural diversity. As we mark Mandela’s birthday on July 18, let us reflect on his powerful reminder: “It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity.” This Mandela Day, KEEF encourages everyone to take meaningful action, big or small, to help build a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate world.

The Kenya-based Mountain Bongo Project and the UK's Chester Zoo have collaborated to establish a series of night cameras in Kenya's Maasai Mau Forest to confirm the existence of a small group of the critically endangered Mountain Bongo antelope. This shy and elusive species is recognized by the distinctive white stripes along its sides and face, with each animal's markings being unique.

While small herds are known to exist in other high-mountain forest regions of Kenya, the Mountain Bongo was believed to be extinct in the Maasai Mau Forest. Fewer than 900 remain in the wild across Kenya, largely due to habitat loss and poaching. The recent sighting of a mature male, a mature female, and a younger Mountain Bongo (whose s*x has yet to be determined) is an encouraging development for the species' limited gene pool. The discovery has generated excitement and renewed hope among conservationists in both Kenya and the UK.

Importantly, these animals were found outside of protected park land. The evidence captured by the night cameras strengthens ongoing efforts to secure formal protection for this important habitat and help safeguard one of Kenya's most endangered species.
