KEEF, with support from a B.C. Rotary Club, has piloted the development of composting education for youth in Kakamega area schools. Climate change is increasing both periods of drought and of heavy, concentrated rainfall in Kenya. School compost gardens provide more variety and greater amounts of vegetables to assist the school in providing lunches for its students. In students’ homes, it will increase the yield and food security of the “kitchen gardens” of some of the financially very poor families from which our scholarship students come. As well, it promotes more thorough sorting of household waste, to use for composting what otherwise would become garbage.

How will your household contribute to nourishing our Planet Earth in April and after Earth Month?

April celebrates our Earth and ways – large and small – that we can help keep our environment healthy.

Thoughtful water use and conservation are increasingly important. A decision like choosing to use a refillable water bottle to avoid repeated use of bottled water – if one lives where there are sources of safe water to refill the reusable bottle – is an Earth-friendly one. In places where safe (potable) drinking water is not readily available, careful planning and actions can help increase the possibility of safe supply and reduce the waste of bottled water.

When KEEF, assisted by funding agencies, improves the infrastructure of a school in rural western Kenya a rainfall catchment system and large water storage tank are often part of the plans. In other rural communities an open spring or other natural source may be covered, making the water safer and reducing water-borne illness for the village.

Angela Sheldrick, head of the Nairobi-based Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, received the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (E.B.S.), presented to her by Kenya’s President William Ruto late last year.

The Trust is active across Kenya in wildlife conservation, community education, the reduction of human-wildlife conflict, anti-poaching efforts, and the rescue, rehabilitation, and rewilding of seriously injured or orphaned wildlife — from elephants to Kenyan birdlife.
