Today we honour the workers who lost their lives during the construction of the Second Narrows Bridge on June 17, 1958.

The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge stands as a lasting reminder of their sacrifice, the families they left behind, and the importance of safety in the trades.

We remember them with respect and gratitude.

Good day CMAW Canada members,

The David G. Flynn Memorial Bursary was created to honour the memory and legacy of Brother David “Dave” Flynn, a proud Pile Driver/Bridgeman from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia.

Brother Flynn served as an Assistant Business Agent and later Business Agent with Local 2404. In 1991, he was elected Secretary Treasurer of the CMAW Bargaining Council, formerly known as the BC Provincial Council of Carpenters where he remained until late 2004.

During the founding of the CMAW Bargaining Council and CMAW’s path toward becoming an independent Canadian construction union, Dave was remembered as “CMAW’s rock.” His quiet determination, strong principles, and deep sense of right and wrong helped guide the union through an important time in its history.

Brother Flynn passed away on April 26, 2005, after a battle with leukemia. The bursary that bears his name continues to honour his contribution by supporting CMAW members and their families pursuing post-secondary education or training.

Applications must be forwarded by June 30, 2026.

In solidarity,
CMAW Canada

Another great entry into our Tools Through Time Series.

This antique wooden spokeshave was once an important tool for carpenters, joiners, wheelwrights, and chair makers. Likely dating back to the late 1800s or early 1900s, this hand tool was used to shape and smooth curved pieces of wood, including wheel spokes, chair legs, tool handles, paddles, and rounded edges.

The wooden handles gave the user control, while the small metal blade shaved off thin curls of wood with precision.

Simple, practical, and built to last, this spokeshave is a reminder of the skill and craftsmanship that shaped the trades long before power tools became common.

CMAW Canada was proud to be in Hope at the Fraternal Order of Eagles for a couple of great meetings with workers from the Primo Water plant.

It was a valuable opportunity to connect, answer questions, share information, and listen to the issues that matter most to the workers.

Thank you to everyone who came out and took the time to be part of the conversation. Strong participation and open communication are what help workers stay informed, united, and moving forward together.
