What does it actually mean to welcome someone?

Not just to open a door — but to make room. To learn their name. To show up again after the first time. To be part of what makes a new place feel like somewhere they belong.

In Canada, we are proud to be a country that welcomes newcomers. That pride is carried forward by communities and organizations that choose — again and again — to make welcome real.

Journey Home Community is one of those communities. Built on the belief that refugee claimant families deserve more than a roof — they deserve to be known, supported, and genuinely welcomed.

We are proud to be a country that carries on that legacy. And we expect our communities and leaders to do the same.

Here in Canada, we come from many places and we look out for each other. That's always been part of who we are.

Refugee claimants arriving in the Lower Mainland bring something our communities genuinely need — skills, languages, professional experience, perspective.

But when families arrive without stable housing or settlement support, those contributions get delayed. Sometimes lost entirely.

When we invest in a strong foundation for newcomer families — housing, community, wraparound support — we're not just doing the right thing. We're building a stronger community for everyone.

In Canada, we know we're better off together. Journey Home Community is part of making that real.

This Saturday, we’re coming together for Ride for Refuge — and there’s still time to be part of it!
🚲 JOIN — Grab your bike or walking shoes and join us for the 10 km or 20 km ride or walk.
❤️ SUPPORT — Can’t make it? Make a donation and help support Journey Home Community’s work with refugee claimants.
🙌 VOLUNTEER — We still have a few volunteer spots to fill. Come help us make Ride day happen!

We’re almost at the starting line! 🙌

In just over a week, our community will come together once again for Ride for Refuge.

It’s one of our favourite days of the year — filled with familiar faces catching up, new friendships being made, families walking together, volunteers cheering people on, and a whole lot of laughter and good energy along the way.

But at the heart of it is something bigger: a community coming together to stand with refugee claimants.

On October 3, every person who walks, rides, volunteers or gives helps support Journey Home Community as we provide housing, settlement support and opportunities for connection.

In Canada, we've always known that we're stronger when everyone can contribute.

Refugee claimant families arriving in the Lower Mainland bring professional expertise, multilingual capacity, entrepreneurial drive, and lived experience that enrich the communities they join.

But that contribution requires a foundation — stable housing, settlement support, time to navigate credential recognition. When those things are in place, the outcomes are remarkable. Employment. Integration. Children who outperform their peers in school.

Journey Home Community exists to help build that foundation during the most critical early months. Not as charity — but as an investment in the kind of community we want to be.

We are proud to be a country that welcomes newcomers, and we expect that welcome to be backed by real support.

What makes Canada feel like Canada?

For a lot of us, it's the sense that we look out for each other. That our communities make room for people from different places, different languages, different backgrounds.

That's the Canada that refugee claimant families are arriving into — and it's the Canada Journey Home Community is trying to embody.

Not through grand gestures. Through consistent presence. Shared meals. Learning someone's name. Showing up week after week.

Community doesn't happen automatically. It's built by people who choose to show up.

When life gets hard, most of us know where to turn.

We have people. Places. A community that holds us.

That network didn't appear overnight. It was built over years — through relationships, shared history, and the simple fact of being somewhere long enough to put down roots.

Refugee claimant families arrive without that. They are starting from nothing, in a new country, often in the middle of one of the hardest seasons of their lives.

Journey Home Community exists to be a first landing place — stable, safe, and surrounded by people who show up.

We all want our families to have somewhere safe to land. That desire doesn't change depending on where someone was born.

Everyone deserves a place to land.

From welcoming participants and helping at registration to supporting our routes, rest stops, food and cleanup, our volunteers are a big part of what makes Ride for Refuge happen.

Whether we grew up here or moved here — we all know that community is what makes a place feel like home.

It's the people who know your name. The neighbours who check in. The feeling that you belong somewhere.

For refugee claimant families arriving in the Lower Mainland, that sense of community doesn't come automatically. It has to be built — and building it takes time, consistency, and people who choose to show up.

Journey Home Community creates intentional spaces for connection: community meals, shared living, friendships between families and Canadian volunteers. Not programming for its own sake — but genuine relationship, built over time.

Because belonging is not a feeling that arrives on its own. It grows where people decide to make room for it.

In Canada, we speak many languages, come from many places, and across our differences, we look out for each other. That's the community we're building here.
