Every family Journey Home Community walks alongside has people behind the scenes making that possible.

This month, we're delighted to welcome **Seun Osoniyi (pronounced Shay-oon)** to the team as our new Volunteer Program Supervisor.

Seun brings experience across law, women's health and education, along with a gift for bringing people together around a shared purpose. Having been a newcomer herself, she knows what it means to arrive somewhere unfamiliar and look for belonging — and she cares deeply about creating opportunities for our families to feel at home.

She's especially looking forward to getting to know our volunteers and growing the program in ways that help families flourish sooner.

What does volunteering at Journey Home look like?

It could mean spending a Saturday outside helping care for one of our properties. 🌱

It could mean using your language skills to bridge a conversation. 💬

Or it could mean joining the crew that brings one of our community events to life. 🎉

Our volunteers bring different skills, interests, backgrounds and schedules — and that’s exactly what makes our community stronger.

Right now, we’re looking for Interpreters & Translators, Child-minding and activity leaders, Food Hamper delivery drivers, along with several other opportunities.

Skills don't disappear when someone crosses a border.

But for refugee claimants, the pathways to using those skills often do — at least temporarily. Credential recognition takes time. Licensing takes time. Building a professional network in a new country takes time.

In the meantime, families still need to eat. Pay rent. Show up for their kids. And they do — with remarkable resilience.

Journey Home Community walks alongside families in that in-between season. Providing housing, support, and community while they rebuild what they had before.

Because the gap between arrival and opportunity is real. And no one should cross it alone.

Part 2 of our Refugee Key Facts series — and these ones might surprise you. Swipe through. 👉

Refugees arrive younger than the average Canadian, helping address one of the country's most pressing demographic challenges: an aging workforce.

They don't cluster only in major cities — nearly half settle in smaller communities, contributing to local economies across Canada.

Despite arriving with very little, most refugee families invest in long-term stability. The majority who have been here a decade own their homes. Many purchase within five years.

And their children? They perform as well as or better than Canadian-born peers in school, with higher rates of completing high school, college, and university.

These outcomes reflect resilience. And they reflect what's possible when families are given a stable foundation.

Sometimes the most meaningful welcome begins with a simple "hello."

Every week, Journey Home Community volunteers give their time, skills, and hearts to help refugee claimant families feel seen, supported, and connected.

Whether they're helping someone practice English, caring for children, preparing a meal, or simply sharing conversation, our volunteers are creating caring communities where newcomers can belong.

Ask any refugee claimant family what made the biggest difference in their settlement experience, and community comes up every time.

Not just services. Not just housing. People who showed up — consistently, genuinely, over time.

That sense of belonging — of being known and included — is what turns a temporary place to stay into a home. And it's what Journey Home Community is intentionally building for families in the Lower Mainland.
